Petrol price hike fuels protests

Even as Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has assured to consider reducing VAT on petrol, the common man is all set to oppose the petrol price hike decision of the government.

After announcing its fourth fuel hike since December 2010, the Centre has now asked the state governments to cut down the state taxes to cushion the burden of the people.

Yesterday morning, the chief minister said that he would study the matter and then consider on waiving off the state tax.

At present, Karnataka, charges about 25 per cent as sales tax and 5 per cent as entry tax on petrol, thereby the petrol rates in the state are the highest. The new petrol rate in the city is Rs 74.54 per litre (up by Rs 3.14).

BJP Yuva Morcha that already has given a clarion call to all its activists to protest against the hike, is also contemplating to ask the state government to reduce the state taxes.

"We have asked all our members to start a state-wide protest in all the taluks and districts over the issue," said Jagadish Hiremani, general secretary, BJP Yuva Morcha.

"The state tax is above 25 per cent, one of the highest in the country, so we also are discussing the matter to plan out our action," he added.
