Fluctuation in temperatures has affected the produce causing a shortfall; traders say LBT strike has compounded their problems

Better hurry and stock up on Devgad alphonso mangoes, as the king of fruits will be available only for the next one week after which Vashi’s Agriculture Produce Market Committee will no longer sell them.

The reason for this bitter news is that the alphonsoes coming in from the Devgad region — known to fetch a premium price every year — did not have a very good produce causing shortfall.

Omkar Sapre, member of the board and chief marketing officer of Devgad Taluka Amba Utpadak Sahakari Sanstha Limited, said, “The very short winter hindered the production of the mangoes. Additionally, the severe heat on April 8 when temperatures soared to 40°C and the aftereffects of the spiralling mercury caused the fruit to rot.”

Director of the APMC market Sanjay Pansare also agreed saying that the Devgad variety of alphonso mangoes would only be sold for the next few days. “We have several customers who demand only the Devgad alphonso mangoes considering they are known to be sweeter and pulpier. Further, the strike by retailers forced us to slash our prices.”

Other traders at the APMC market too opined that they were selling the Devgad mangoes at a cheaper rate as compared to past and that the strike against the LBT had affected their business drastically. “Mangoes have a shelf life and we have to sell them once they have ripened. When retailers did not buy owing to the strike, the mangoes started rotting away,” said Rahul Sheakh, one of the wholesalers at APMC.u00a0
