Taking on Raj Thackeray, whose party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had threatened to disrupt Bihar's centenary celebrations in the city to be attended by him, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar yesterday said people from his state and Uttar Pradesh have not been a burden on Mumbai.

Participating in the Bihar Divas programme at Somaiyya grounds, Nitish said that whenever he speaks he makes it a point to speak on friendship and brotherhood. “Your speeches should not create bitterness among people,” he said, addressing a mammoth gathering for the function hosted by Bihar Foundation.

“Earlier, people used to tease Bihar and its people. But that’s no longer a fact now and we have been on the path of progress,” Kumar said, adding, “Maharashtra is the birthplace of great people such as Mahatma Phule and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. The constitution of India drafted by Dr Ambedkar has given freedom to every Indian to move in any part of the nation. I don’t understand why north Indians should be looked down upon. You (people from Maharashtra) can celebrate Maharashtra Day in Bihar. We will certainly welcome you.”

Earlier, addressing a meeting with top corporate honchos from the city, Nitish appealed to them to come forward for investment in Bihar. He announced a committee to assist in the promotion of trade and investment. Representatives of big industrial houses such as Tatas, Bajaj, L&T, Vedanta, Adani Group were present for the meeting. u00a0
