Oil spill: Over 15 bikers bite dust

It could have been a scene straight out of a Bollywood film. Around 1.30 pm last afternoon, a couple of packets of edible oil being transported in a tempo spilled on the road opposite Jehangir Hospital resulting in a gooey mess and quite a few minor accidents.

Soon after the spill, two-wheelers following the tempo started skidding one after another. Eyewitnesses said that though no one was hurt, for the next 20 minutes about 15 to 20 two-wheelers, motorcycles as well as scooters, slipped and people fell on the oil-splattered road.

Onlookers immediately informed the traffic police who informed the fire-brigade officials. The whole drama went on till half-an-hour and commuters took the responsibility of guiding the bikers through the road.

Aamir Shaikh, who was helping the bikers, said: "I was walking with my friend when I saw oil spilling on the road and three bikes slipped at the same time. We were rushing to help them, when more bikes skidded. We called the traffic officials and they informed the fire brigade officials who reached within 10 minutes."

Soon after the fire brigade reached the spot, they started throwing dry mud on the road. About five officials kept collecting mud from the side of the road and threw it on the oil-splattered roads.

Baburao Kharad, in-charge of Shivkrupa Hotel located on the road, said: "We heard the cries of people and rushed outside and saw the whole drama unfold. By the time the fire brigade officials came, more than 15 bikes had already skidded.

The traffic flow also became slow for a few minutes, while locals and traffic officials guided the
commuters."
