Considered to be the oldest classical dance form based on archaeological findings, Odissi presents a fine synthesis of femininity and masculinity, incorporating various nuances of the rich traditions of Orissa. Organised by Dance Route, Dhara 2009 will present an even more visually enriching experience of the dance form. Here's what lies in store.
Art and acrobatics
The recital will start on an authentic, classical note with the invocation of the deities. From there, it will slowly delve into the deeper nuances of the performanceu00a0a comprehension of Oriya culture. Five dancers will be featured in the recital that's been designed around music, traditional Oriya paintings Pattachitra, yoga acrobatic elements and folk masks. It's noteworthy that the trained dancers belong to numerous tribal communities and have never performed for commercial gains.
"The dancers who have earlier danced at the Jagannath Temple have been trained under eminent Odissi Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. We have used different patterns of lights to make the concert visually enriching," remarks Rekha Tandon, founder, Dance Routes. Even if you don't comprehend Oriya, the subtitles on the screen will help you decipher the lingo. So, no excuse, please.
Music to the ears
The performance has been composed by musician and filmmaker Michael Weston. "The entire recital has been woven around the authentic rhythm, melodic elements and culture of Orissa," says Michael, who's glad to be a part of India's cultural celebration. Inspiring enough?
