Not allowed to eat home-cooked food brought by kin, dacoit threatens to kill cops on court premises

A dacoit who was denied permission by the police to eat food that members of his family had brought for him when he was at the Lashkar court ended up creating a scene there.

According to the Cantonment police, Jalindersingh Kalyani, who has several housebreaking cases against his name, was in the habit of asking for special privileges.

On Wednesday afternoon, he was at the court with police escorts when he sought leave to eat the home-cooked food his family had got for him.

The escorts denied him permission and this made Kalyani so angry that he threatened to kill the policemen escorting him, said Sub Inspector B C Gavit. Kalyani abused and even pushed the police escorts, said the officer.

Kalyani's outburst was noticed by some senior police officers and he was booked for abusing, threatening and obstructing public servants from carrying out their duty.

Kalyani had been produced in court in connection with a previous case registered at the Wanawadi police station.

The escort accompanying him said there were three police officials, including a sub inspector, but this did not prevent Kalyani from threatened all of them.

According to the Cantonment police, a similar incident had occurred when Raju Uttam Gavali, an inmate at the Yerwada jail, attempted to kill himself in August when escorts denied him permission to use their mobile to contact his relatives.

According to the police, Gavali banged his head against the police vehicle and even broke the light inside.
The police said he inflicted injuries on his hand with pieces of glass. Gavali was booked under IPC Sections 353 and 309 for attempted suicide.

While many inmates become cantankerous and hysterical on being refused even minor privileges, some take advantage of the kind-heartedness of police escorts to give them the slip.

This has put police escorts in a fix as they would like to avoid any unpleasant scenes but at the same time are worried about inmates tricking them and escaping.

Recently, a rape and murder accused, Yogesh Raut, escaped from Sassoon hospital after making calls to his relatives from his police escort's cell phone and asking permission to go to the toilet. Permission was granted, and Raut used the opportunity to run away.

Kalyani, who has several housebreaking cases against his name, was in the habit of asking for special privileges.
