The Karunandhi family on Monday carried along with them a packet of dry fruits and a bottle of fruit juice for Kanimozhi. But these items were seized by jail officials while Kanimozhi was returning to her cell after meeting her family in Tihar's jail No. 6. Tihar jail's law officer Sunil Gupta said, "According to the jail rules, prisoners are not allowed to carry anything given to them by visitors back to their cells."
"A prisoner is only allowed food inside if there is a direction from the court under special circumstances," he added. Gupta said that in Kanimozhi's case, the jail had no directions from the court to allow her to carry food brought by visitors into the jail complex.
The Director-General (Prisons), Delhi, Neeraj Kumar, said, "Inside the jail, no one is a VIP. High-profile prisoners are extended no extra facilities unless permitted by the court." In the case of Raja, the court has granted him permission to get home-cooked food twice a week. Two conditions though come attached: they should contain no curry or fruits.
Earlier in the day, it was an emotional reunion for Kanimozhi with her sister-in-law Kanthi Alagiri at the Patiala House court. Spotting Kanthi inside the courtroom, Kanimozhi went up to her and greeted her. While Kanimozhi maintained her composure, Kanthi broke down inside the courtroom. Kanthi had come to Delhi along with her son Durai Dayanidhi.

Restoring faith
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa yesterday said that action taken in the 2G scam case had restored people's faith in the judiciary. Jayalalithaa also said that Kanimozhi should not be granted bail in the case just because she is a woman. "It's a wrong argument for bail. In politics, no concession is given because you are a woman. The same applies for criminal activities," she said.
