Speaking against the backdrop of JNU controversy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said that while the Naxals were on the backfoot, an insidious form of Left Wing Extremism was taking root in the civil society.

"At a time when our forces are fighting an extensive battle against the Naxals and are achieving success to a large extent, a new form of LWE (Left Wing Extremism) has entered the civil society," he said at a seminar on coastal security here.

"They are appearing as a decent face, but through them a propaganda to vitiate people's mind is being run. Many universities are getting inspired by the so-called civil society of the Left wing. I feel activities of such elements need a special attention," he said.

Referring to the JNU controversy, Fadnavis said, "The country has seen that every college-going student, from any religion or community whatsoever, is full of patriotism... if there is anti-India slogan-shouting and people support it, then I feel there cannot be anything worse than that.

"If for the political motive, we put the national interest aside and stand with traitors, then I feel one might get a short-term benefit, but we must think of its long-term impact," he said.

The seminar had been organised by the Forum For Awareness of Security (FANS).

"We have almost completed the colour coding of fishing vessels of all the districts in the coastal area. (Identity) Cards have been given to the fishermen," the CM said, speaking about the coastal security preparedness.

He also said that it was necessary to involve the local people for securing the coastline fully.
