It appears that the recently introduced police beat system, 'A cop for every street', is quite a success. Its first significant achievement includes the clearance of 6,000 passport verifications within the short span of two weeks.

According to police officials, the new initiative is also responsible for engendering the feel-good factor among lower rung personnel who are enthusiastic about the new idea, feeling like they are part of a system.

"Under this new venture, each police personnel of jurisdictional police stations are being put in charge of a street, responsible for maintaining law and order within its precincts. This would subsequently help in developing a solid crime-fighting network in the entire area for the better maintenance of law and order," said Additional Commissioner of Police (administration) U Nissar Ahmed, who has devised the new beat system.

Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji said, "This system will instill a sense of responsibility into every officer.

Constables give every police department its foundation, and we must patronise them and appreciate their efforts."

Usually, every police station in Bangalore has at least 80 to 100 police personnel. Under the 'A cop for every street' campaign, each police constable will be in-charge of a busy street for one year.

He will be held accountable for any criminal activity that takes place in the street, and has to take the initiative to acquaint himself with all the residents, VIPs, and places of importance in the road.

He must also find out about any anti-social elements or organised criminals operating in the stretch. It will be convenient for him to handle one street.

Verifications
The police had long been struggling with the mammoth task of verifying the addresses and backgrounds of the citizens who apply for passports.

Following the commencement of the campaign, however, almost 6,000 pending passport verifications have been cleared in just two weeks. This is a record for the city.u00a0u00a0
