Following in the footsteps of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Railway Minister, Suresh Prabhu has become the latest politico to reach out to the public via Twitter.

It has been learnt that a team of officials from the railway ministry would be live feeding the details of the rail budget on Twitter handles @RailMinIndia and @sureshpprabhu. Moreover, there is also a possibility that the minister himself could reply to the queries raised by netizens.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will be responding to the tweets over today’s railway budget soon after it is over, claimed sources in the railways. They even added that apart from replying to the tweets, Prabhu is likely to upload reply videos on YouTube pertaining to queries posted on today’s rail budget.

“Timing of the reply via YouTube hasn’t been decided. But it is confirmed that the minister will be using social media to address the public,” said a senior railway official. Railway officials added that a separate team in Delhi would be responsible for live feeding budget details on the Twitter handles.

Another official said, “Railways is India’s lifeline and people are keen on giving suggestions and raising objections. Social media being a strong medium, the ministry has decided to make use of it to connect with the public.” Railway authorities from the Mumbai division feel that Prabhu, being a Mumbaikar, would want to overhaul and pump new life into the city’s crumbling rail network.

Besides, officials rubbished the chances of a fare hike not being announced due to the political setback BJP suffered during the Delhi elections. The railways had proposed that commuters opting for monthly passes be charged for 22 trips instead of the current 15 trips. Chances are that the hike will be discussed in the coming months.
