The former Chief Minister wants to contest from one of the two Council seats under Mumbai local authority category that are due to fall vacant on January 1, 2016, sources in Congress said today.
The Konkan strongman was defeated in the October 2014 Assembly elections from Kudal in his home turf of coastal Maharashtra. He then made an unsuccessful attempt to get back into the Legislative Assembly from Bandra East, where Assembly by-election was held in April this year. On both occasions, he lost to candidates from Shiv Sena, his former party.
"After the defeat in Assembly bypoll, Rane wants to enter the legislature through the Council route," the sources said.
From December 2015 to July 2016, 30 Council seats are falling vacant. Of these, 18 are falling vacant between December 5, 2015 and January 1, 2016.
The Election Commission has already notified summary revision of electoral rolls for Amravati, Nashik, Aurangabad, Konkan and Nagpur, where Council seats under graduate and teacher constituencies will fall vacant on December 5.
Besides these, six other MLC seats are falling vacant on the same date. These are Sangli-Satara, Bhandara-Gondia, Yavatmal, Pune, Nanded and Jalgaon (all under local authorities category.
The party-wise break-up of Council members retiring on December 5 are ¿ Vikram Kale (Aurangabad-Teachers), Prabhakar Gharge (Sangli-Satara local authorities), Rajendra Jain (Bhandara-Gondia local authorities), Sandip Bajoria (Yavatmal local authorities), Anil Bhosale (Pune local authorities) ¿ all NCP, Sudhir Tambe (Nashik graduates) and Amarnath Rajurkar
(Nanded local authorities) ¿ both Congress, Gurmukh Das Jagwani (Jalgaon local authorities) and Minister of State for Home Ranjit Patil (Amravati graduates) ¿ both BJP, Nago Ganar (Nagpur teachers) and Ramnath Mote (Konkan teachers) ¿ both Independents.
The partywise breakup of eight more MLCs retiring on January 1, 2016 is ¿ Deepak Salunkhe, Solapur Local authorities (NCP), Ashok alias Bhai Jagtap, Mumbai local authorities, Amrishbhai Patel (Dhule-Nandurbar local authorities), Mahadevrao Mahadik (Kolhapur local authorities) and Rajendra Mulak (Nagpur local authorities) ¿ all Congress, Minister for Environment Ramdas Kadam (Mumbai local authorities) and Gopikisan Bajoria (Akola-Washim-Buldhana local authorities) ¿ both Shiv Sena and Independent Arunkaka Jagtap (Ahmednagar local authorities).
Besides, 11 more Council seats are due to fall vacant in June and July 2016. Of these one seat of Thane Local authorities is held by NCP's Vasant Davkhare.
The 10 Upper House members whose term is due to end on July 7 are Council Chairman Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar, Prakash Binsale, Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde (all NCP), Deepti Chaudhari and Muzaffar Hussain (both Congress), Shobhatai Fadnavis and Vinayak Mete (both BJP), Minister for Industries Subhash Desai and Minister for Public Transport Diwakar Raote (both Shiv Sena) and Independent MLC Vijay Sawant.
