The process of choosing the candidates was completely overhauled on the directives from the young parliamentarian. One seat each has been reserved for a woman aspirant and another from the scheduled caste/tribe community.

The names were finalised after NSUI-elected college units and delegates heard the speeches of aspirant candidates and then voted for them. The candidates who won the election areu00a0-- Harish Choudhary, 1st year student of SGTB Khalsa College, AA Vardhan Choudhary, 2nd year student of Ramjas College. The SC/ST reserved seats went tou00a0 Akshay Kumar, 1st year MA Buddhist student while the one reserved for the girl candidate went to Deepika Deshwal of the same college.

Mohd. Shahnawaz Choudhary, Incharge Delhi NSUI said: "These candidates are final but we will decide later which candidate will contest for which post. The election was held under the observation of representatives from the JM Lyngdoh-headed Foundation for Advanced Management for Election."

The total number of votes caste were 412, in which 2 votes were invalid. From this year, instead of being nominated, candidates for the four DUSU posts were chosen by an electoral college of NSUI delegates from various Delhi University institutions.

"About 400 delegates from various DU colleges voted for their candidates. All the delegates were chosen last November when the elections to the NSUI's Delhi state unit had taken place. We know it is a risky move. However, someone had to take the initiative against caste politics," added Choudhary.

Today is the last date for filing nominations for the DUSU elections. Polls are scheduled to take place on September 3. From this year the organisation has also reserved a seat each for an SC/ST and woman candidate. The DUSU elections will see contestants running for president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary.

As per schedule the election will take place on September 3, 2010. Candidates can withdraw their names from the election by August 26.

Last year the candidature of NSUI and ABVP members were cancelled. The candidates disqualified were Deepak Negi and Umesh Tomar of NSUI and Rohit Chahal, Lalit Kumar and Ashok Khare of ABVP. Negi and Chahal were candidates for president's post. While Tomar was aiming for vice-presidentship, Kumar was a candidate for the post of secretary and Khare for joint secretary.
As per the allegations, their candidature was cancelled after the five were found spending more money than the stipulated Rs 5,000 each.
