Singer-composer Adnan Sami approaches Crime Branch, demands action against ex-wife Sabah Galadari for allegedly violating passport norms

My former wife has multiple passports, says Adnan Sami

Singer and composer Adnan Sami approached the Crime Branch and other agencies, claiming that his ex-wife Sabah Galadari has three different UAE passports. Sami in his complaint dated June 6 (a copy of which is available with MiD DAY) said that Galadari had obtained a PAN card, Indian Visa and a driving licence in India using one of her fake UAE passports.

On September 4, 2004, the complaint alleges, Galadari acquired a passport, in which her birth date is July 20, 1974. The passport was valid till September 5, 2009. However, Galadari is also allegedly in possession of another, older passport, issued in 2000, in which her birth date is July 20, 1968. This passport was to expire on May 22, 2005. She also said to have a third passport, issued in 2009. Apparently, at least between 2004 and 2005, Galadari had two passports, not having surrendered her first.

Multiple passports
It was during her cross-examination in the Bandra Family Court in April this year that the fact that she had multiple passports came to light. The complaint also alleges that Galadari is also the holder of a Portuguese passport, a claim that Galadari denied during the examination. Holding a dual citizenship is illegal in the UAE.

“Immigration authorities are oblivious and have failed to detect such fraud, false declarations, bogus and illegal change of identity,” said Sami in his complaint. Sami’s lawyer, Vibhav Krishna said, “Sami has lodged a complaint with the police and it is up to them to take action. The matrimonial matter is currently sub-judice.”

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Roy said, “Sami had come to meet me and has given the complaint. I have forwarded it to additional commissioner of police (West region) Vishwas Nangre-Patil, who will investigate further.” When contacted, DCP Aswathi Dorje, who is in charge of the FRRO, said, “We have forwarded the complaint to the concerned country, and it is up to them to take action.”

When asked whether a holder of multiple passports posed a security risk, Dorje added, “Lots of countries permit their citizens to hold dual citizenships, so it is possible for them to have more than one passport. We only check if the passport is correctly stamped.” Interestingly, the UAE does not recognise dual citizenship.

High Court grants divorce to Sami
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted a divorce to singer Adnan Sami and UAE citizen Sabah Galadari. Adnan had married Sabah in 2001, divorced her in 2004 and remarried her in 2007. Their relation, however, soured again and Sabah moved the family court for divorce again in 2009 and had also filed a case under the Domestic Violence Act against Adnan. Justice Roshan Dalvi granted the estranged couple divorce while hearing a petition filed by Adnan challenging the order of the Family Court holding that the dissolution of marriage certificate produced by Galadari was invalid and hence they were still married. Justice Dalvi granted the divorce after observing that both the parties are not opposing the dissolution of marriage.

The other side
Mrunalini Deshmukh, who is Galadari’s advocate said, “As far as the passports are concerned, they expire and are subsequently renewed, just like any normal passport. At present, she possesses just one passport, which is of the UAE. Besides, whatever action that needs to be taken can only be taken by UAE authorities, not Indian ones.”u00a0
