Sister act: Esha and Ahana perform for grandmom

Familiar with the stereotypical image of the 'mummy' who tags along with the 'baby' (read: Hindi film actress) during shoots? Well, Hema Malini was one of the proud 'ask-my-mamma' actresses and, had it not been for her mother, Jaya Chakravarthy, the Hindi film industry would have never seen a Hema Malini.

Her mother, a producer, introduced her to classical dances at a tender age, and is believed to have been a votary of family values with strong leanings towards the arts. Hema Malini's annual function, Jaya Smriti, that she organises on her mother's death anniversary every year, pays homage to the woman who passed away in June 2004. This weekend, apart from Kathak, Manipuri, Kathakali and Mahari dance performances, Hema Malini's daughters -- Esha and Ahana -- will pay homage to their grandmom through an Odissi dance. This act promises to be a treat for lovers of this Classical dance form.

Blues, Flamenco, Jazz and finger-picking -- four international guitarists will jam for a jugalbandi, this Saturday. Presently on a five-city tour, these guitar maestros will perform for Mumbai, as part of Black Dog Easy Evenings. Blues guitarist Dave Goodman's shows are high energy, and often humorous. He takes his audience through an array of emotions with sensitive ballads, high-powered blues, interspersed with funny and moving stories.

Flamenco guitarist Eric Vaarzon Morel is the principal teacher of flamenco guitar at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. Jazz guitarist Frank Wingold (in the photograph) combines Classical, Jazz and Rock-oriented techniques on acoustic and electric guitars, to develop his own style of improvisation and composition, whereas Dylan Fowler is one of the foremost exponents of finger-picking, who will showcase nuances of guitar unseen and unheard before.

Till Passow's 26-minute documentary titled Howrah Howrah leads to this place full of life, movement, joy and affliction and shows the versatility of Kolkata and the chaos anarchically carving one's way through the microcosm of the station. If you miss the film's screening, hop in for The Trail, a project that saw six authors from Berlin, Warsaw and Mumbai exchange their place of residency for three weeks. Three authors from these six will be in discussion on November 13 at 6.30 pm.
