The accused, Sarang Patharkar, was arrested from Pune

A 38-year-old former restaurant owner was brutally murdered in the wee hours of Tuesday at his home in Antop Hill. His neighbours on the seventh floor in Penta Galaxy's B Wing claimed they heard screaming and alerted the police. Anand Narayan was found lying in a pool of blood at his residence, following which he was rushed to Sion hospital where he was declared dead before admission, a police official said.

Narayan was alone as his wife and 12-year-old daughter were out of town. Police said he had invested in a restaurant in Parel with his friend Sarang Patharkar, 40, three years back, but it later wound up. They said Patharkar, who ran it, allegedly owed Narayan money from the business and he kept pestering him to return it.

On Monday night, Patharkar, accompanied by their friend Tambiselva Manikamm Devendra, 38, took Narayan drinking. All of them were drunk and went to his house later. Police said Patharkar then used a chopper to cut Narayan’s throat and later left with Tambi.

They said around 6 am on Tuesday, Tambi surrendered to them and told them he was in the house when the murder took place. Police said Tambi told them he was in another room when Patharkar went into Narayan’s bedroom, and later told him that he had killed him. Police then rushed to Pune where Patharkar had fled, and arrested him. Police said CCTV images show the three of them entering the building. Rajiv Vhaval, senior inspector, Antop Hill police station, said, "We have arrested both accused."
