In Hadapsar, commuters have to wait till rickshaw gets full or be prepared to pay extra charge

On Day 3 of Week 4 of MiD DAY and Radio One's autorickshaw campaign in association with the traffic police and the Regional Transport Office, eight offenders were booked.

The MiD DAY team stationed itself in Hadapsar and then met the traffic police officers near Kirloskar Bridge. API R B Nale briefed the reporters on the area.

"We have been booking autos for wrong parking, no uniforms and badges, but still you find auto drivers not following rules," he said. "In May itself we booked 28 vehicles (unconnected with the MiD DAY campaign).

Sometimes the auto drivers are fined Rs 2,000." He alsou00a0 appreciated MiD DAY's special drive.

The reporters efforts yesterday resulted in four auto drivers getting booked in the first round in the morning and four more in evening round.

The reporters had the support of ASI Tukaram Diwate, Constable Vishal Shirke and two more officers.

The reporters asked the drivers to ferry them to far off places like Viman Nagar, Vishrantwadi, Sanghvi and Shivaji Nagar. Some drivers refused and one quoted extra fare.

A woman, along with two burqa-clad women, wanted to go to a hospital as one of them was not well and needed medical attention.

But an auto driver refused them and sped away. Another woman, Maya Bhosle, wanted to go Swargate but was refused by a driver before another agreed to take her.

There are a lot of commercial establishments in this area and in the evening after office-hours, there are a lot of commuters waiting for transport to go home.

The commuters informed that autorickshaw drivers do not go for single fare, but carry more passengers on sharing basis.

So most of the time they have to wait till the auto is full with passengers. They have to pay extra fare, if the auto takes single fare.

Two of the drivers, the reporter booked at the Krome Chowk for refusal to go to Bavdhan, said, "We only take share fares and go to nearby places."

Radhika Mohta: My last trip to Pune over the weekend would have been great, but for the commuting bit of it. I travelled from Dhole Patil road to Kalewadi, Viman Nagar to Kondhwa . The way I was taken for a ride by the autowallas is amazing! I was asked for 100 bucks for a 4-km distance. I didn't take it though. I was asked for Rs 55 when the meter read Rs 51.3.
