Victim alleges cops made him run from one police station to another before he could get an FIR registered

It's never a good idea to accept offer of lift from a stranger. It's a particularly bad idea if you are in Gurgaon. And you can't bank on the police to get you out of the situation either. This is the experience of Rohit Singh, who was beaten up and robbed of his valuables inside a car in which he took a lift.

When he went to register a case, cops made him run between two police stations. They finally registered a case of theft. Manesar resident Rohit Singh, who works with the Future Group in the sales department, had a horrifying night while returning from work to home.

For a lift
"I was coming back to my home from Ghaziabad. I was waiting for some transport at IFFCO Chowk, Gurgaon, at around 9.30 pm but I saw a white Santro car with a commercial number plate coming towards me. Two people were already sitting inside. A person standing next to me asked for a lift and the car stopped. So even I took a lift. As the car reached near Rajiv Chowk flyover, the people inside started to punch me in the face and stomach. Then I realised that even the guy who took a lift with me was a part of their gang.

There were four members, including the driver. The three others started to hit and slap me. Then they searched my pockets and my bags. They took my new laptop (Dell N5010, manufactured June 2011), Nokia (6220 classic) and a Reliance mobile phone. They took my wallet which had Rs 13000 cash, my driving licence, Bike RC and my ID proof in that purse," explained Rohit.

Not done yet
The robbers were not finished with Rohit as yet. "They wanted to know my ATM password; to get that they started hitting me with an iron rod. I told them my password and they withdrew Rs 15,500 from an ATM in Sohna at around 10:30 pm. Then they took the car to Sohna hills and they kept moving around in the area for almost an hour.

At around midnight they stopped the car near Bhiwadi and withdrew Rs 25,000 from an ATM at around 12.30 am. Then we came to Ashiyana village (Bhiwadi) where they stopped their car and two people went to attend nature's call. I took the advantage of the situation and after grappling with the two remaining persons I managed to get away to a nearby construction site. I started shouting for help hearing which some workers came outside the gate. The goons immediately fled the spot. Finally some locals gave me a lift on a bike to Dharuhera and I reached home at 4.30 am."

This was not the end of Rohit's troubles. "The very next day I went with my father and uncle to sector 29 police station to get an FIR lodged, but they said the area is not under their jurisdiction and that I should go to Sadar Bazaar police station in Gurgaon. When we reached Sadar Bazaar police station, they told us that my case lies under the jurisdiction of sector 29 police station. I was not even able to walk but still they made to go from one station to another. I had no strength to argue with the police and they insisted that they would write only about the theft of my laptop, mobile and money," said Rohit.

Cops deny allegation
While none of the police officials replied to our query, one of them said, "We have registered the case and the matter is being investigated. We did not make him run from one police station to another and neither are we trying to weaken his case."
