A month ago, MiD DAY had pointed out that the unrestricted sight the newly-opened road overbridge offered of the airport was a serious security risk
Taking a long view of the safety concerns raised by MiD DAY on May 28 (‘Danger in plane sight’) about the newly opened Milan road over bridge (RoB), authorities have finally sprung into action. Police officials have visited the location of the RoB that offers an unrestricted view of the airport, and have instructed Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to immediately install view cutters on the bridge.

Earlier, this newspaper had visited the RoB after its inauguration to discover that scores of curious visitors were flocking to the bridge, parking their vehicles, and clicking photographs with impunity. Others could be seen shooting videos of planes as they lifted off into the skies. On June 12, representatives of the police and traffic departments visited the bridge, after which they instructed MMRDA to install view cutters at the earliest.
Confirming the development, MMRDA joint project director Dilip Kawathkar said, “The police officials have written a letter, instructing us to install vision barriers on the bridge, so that people and motorists don’t get a look at the airport. In the communication it has also been mentioned that installation of view cutters would help in preventing traffic jams that might take place when people park their vehicles on the bridge. We will soon start the process.” Sources from MMRDA told this newspaper that the authority would be spending Rs 15 lakh on the installation of vision barriers or view cutters on the RoB.
