Love interrupted

Shiv Sena activists were busy with their day job on Saturday this time, disturbing the peace of lovers at Peshwe Park on Valentine's Day.

Shiv Sainiks with saffron flags forcefullyu00a0 married off some couples celebrating V-Day and burned some greeting cards near Fergusson College. While the police did arrest 14 goons in the area, they reached the trouble spots very late.

Unacceptable

Reacting to the situation, Kiran Moghe, the state president, Akhil Bharatiya Janawadi Mahila Sangh, said the police should have anticipated the Sena violence.

"Who gave these moral goondas the right to marry off these kids? Shiv Sena's behaviour is an attack on the fundamental rights of citizens and goes against the norms of democracy," Moghe said.

Shubha Shamim, the vice president of Janawadi Mahila Sangh, accused Hindu organisations indulging in moral policing of promoting Talibani culture.

"We are living in a dictatorship run by the moral police. These activists have no right to lecture others on religion, ethics and cultural codes," she said.

Sadhana Dadhich, a veteran activist from Nari Samata Manch, said the argument of the Sena activist that you can't be friends with a member of the opposite sex if you are not married to them, is laughable.

"Forcing youngsters into marriage is not acceptable. It is the fundamental right of an individual to decide whether to get married or not," she said.
