The idea for The Orange Bicycle, a new lifestyle store in Indiranagar was conceived not over cups of coffee sitting in a fancy cafe but was imagined in a faraway small town in Jharkhand. Gunjan Khaitan Shahabadi conceived the idea of starting a store or a cafe-like project sitting in Giridih, Jharkhand in April this year where she was on holiday at her in laws. She soon got in touch with three old, likeminded friends over the internet and conceptualised The Orange Bicycle.

"We always wanted to do something like a cafe or a store in Bangalore for the longest time so when my friends agreed to come on board, setting up shop became easier," Shahabadi says. A media planner and marketing executive by profession, Shahbadi's partners (who she cannot name because of the sleeping role they play in this venture) are from as diverse backgrounds as accounting and design.
The name The Orange Bicycle comes from memories and experiences that these four small town friends had. "We wanted to arouse curiosity and bring back memories, especially since life in small towns is quite laidback. We wanted to bring back fun, colourful memories for people through the name and a bicycle was a symbol of taking a ride, discovering something new," Shahabadi says.
Infact, Shahabadi has been receiving a standard feedback from people visiting her nearly a month-old-store that one trip is not enough to experience The Orange Bicycle. The store spaced out in four rooms stocks 70 odd designers and labels from all over the country, most of them being upcoming designers.
Shahabadi got in touch with labels and designers individually through Facebook and also friends at the National Institute of Design and the National Institute of Fashion Technology, put her on to independent designers. "The idea is to talk about the people behind the labels stocked here and their work. So, we never remove the label names from the products at The Orange Bicycle," says Shahabadi.

Everything from quirky clocks, snazzy laptop bags or lapdesks (to work on your laptop while you sit on the bed), cycle tyre chandelier, to cushion covers, to junk jewellery to buckets that are quirky seats and even pretty potted plants that are ready to be bought off the shelves, you will find almost anything you might have spied on recently on Facebook pages belonging to indie labels.
There is a kids section that stocks everything from cutesy bed covers to toys to kiddie furniture. The store is an overload on your senses and indeed one trip is not enough to discover everything contained in it.
