While a video game based on a mashup of a movie (which itself is based on a theme park ride!) and a toy company might sound like a recipe for disaster, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean turns out to be a pleasant surprise.
Clearly, the target audience is the young ones, with its charming and cutesy aesthetics, and goofy sense of humour. The game recreates key moments from all the 4 movies in the franchise using its pantomime and
sound effects, with the character design mimicking the popular Lego toys.u00a0
The levels are well designed and the graphics are rich with colour and detail. Story-telling isn't the game's strength; those unfamiliar with the movies will be lost. But the comedy bits work, thanks to the hilarious body language and expressions of the characters.
The gameplay is a fun mix of puzzle solving and smashing whatever you can to collect goodies which aid in unlocking characters and bonuses. The action is presented in a way that feels harmless and cartoonish, which is suitable for the pre-teen audience.
The animation is great, Jack Sparrow's movements in particular are very well done. Some moments of clumsy platforming aside, the controls are simple and effective. There's about 10 and more hours of gameplay and the unlockables provide some replay value.
In a market saturated with realistic, ultra-violent titles with serious themes, Pirates comes across as a fresh, fun and light-hearted piece of entertainment, something the family and casual crowd is sure to enjoy.
