INDIA parties called for a Joint Parliamentary Committee investigation into the Modani scam - the case for which has been reinforced by the recent indictments of Adani's bribery and suppression of information from Indian and American regulators," said Jairam Ramesh in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Earlier on Monday, INDIA bloc leaders held a meeting before the commencement of the parliament session. The leaders demanded to hold discussions on the Adani indictment, stated ANI. We need healthy market-driven competition in the private sector, which facilitates equal opportunities, employment and equitable distribution of wealth, catering to the inherent entrepreneurial spirit of India," Mallikarjun Kharge said in a post on X. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha sessions were adjourned for the day amid demands for a thorough investigation into the allegations surrounding the Adani Group. Both houses will be meeting on Wednesday. In response to the opposition's actions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned their tactics, labeling them as "hooliganism" aimed at disrupting parliamentary proceedings for political gain.  He remarked on the repeated electoral rejections faced by certain opposition members and expressed that their behavior undermines the democratic process. "Unfortunately, some people, who have been rejected by the public, are constantly trying to control the parliament for their own political interests through the hooliganism of the people. The public counts all their activities and punishes them when the time comes," PM Modi said. "In the democratic tradition, the job of every member is to prepare the next members, but those who have been rejected by the people 80-90 times, do not allow any discussion in the Parliament, do not respect the sentiments of democracy, do not understand the importance of people's expectations," the PM added. Women rally against AFSPA in Manipur's Imphal East district

Thousands of women went against curfew orders and held a rally in Manipur's Imphal East district on Monday, demanding the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958 to be repealed from the state, PTI reported. As per PTI, the rally organised by local clubs and Meira Paibis in the district raised slogans and placards demanding the "removal of AFSPA from the state" and to "stop imposition of the draconian law" and "stop killing of women and children" in the northeastern state. The rally started from Konga Bazaar but was halted after 3 km by a huge contingent of security forces at Konung Mamang, just one kilometre away from the Chief Minister's Secretariat. The protestors later returned to Kongba for a public meeting. Babina Maibam, a Meira Paibi, told PTI, "We are demonstrating against the continued suppression of indigenous people... We cannot return to those injustices and brutalities of the past. There are fake encounter cases pending in the Supreme Court. The recent reimposition of AFSPA in areas under six police stations shows that the Centre only wants to amplify the sufferings of the people." The AFSPA gives armed forces who are operating in disturbed areas the authority to search, arrest, and open fire if they find it necessary for the "maintenance of public order." The Centre has recently reimposed the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in six police station areas in Manipur, including the violence-hit Jiribam. The Union Home Ministry said in a statement that the decision was made because of the continued ethnic violence and the resulting unstable situation, PTI cited. The police station areas where AFSPA has been reimposed are Sekmai and Lamsang in Imphal West, Lamlai in Imphal East, Jiribam in Jiribam district, Leimakhong in Kangpokpi, and Moirang in Bishnupur district. 7 more arrested in connection to arson and property damage cases; 32 arrested so far Manipur Police on Friday arrested seven more individuals related to the arson and property damage incidents involving elected members on November 16, bringing the total number of arrests to 32, reported the ANI. Kerala: Locals in Kochi protest against Waqf (Amendment) Bill

Among the sixteen bills for the winter session of Parliament beginning on Monday, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is one of government's agenda, but the people of Kochi have raised their concerns through a protest against the Act, ANI reported.  As per ANI, the people protesting claim that the Munambam community is facing hardships due to the Waqf Act. One of the protestors said that they have been protesting for the last 33 days, following a non-violent approach. Despite buying the property between the years 1988 and 1993 and residing there for more than 150 years, the Waqf Board has now taken ownership. The community has requested the government to review the Waqf Act and facilitate the return of their property.  "We are on the 33rd day of our protest and this is a fasting protest following the method of non-violence. Today, we brought an effigy of the Waqf Act. We are not against any particular religion, we are only against the Waqf Act which has to be amended... We need to amend the laws because we have to address certain issues which are deeply rooted in today's India," he told ANI. "The Munambam people here are suffering due to this Act. In 1995, the act enabled the Waqf Board to claim this property. These fishermen have been living in this place for the last 150 years. They bought this property in 1988-1993. After 35 years of possessing this property, today they are asked to leave because the Waqf Board has entered this property into their registration. We expect that the Government will notice all these things and make the necessary changes to change the Waqf Act and enable us to reclaim this property," he added, ANI cited. Meanwhile, the Waf (Amendment) Bill, which is listed for consideration and passing, is under examination by a joint committee of both House of Parliament. The panel will submit its report during the winter session. Opposition members are hoping for an extension of time for the panel to provide its report.  The winter session is scheduled to begin on November 25 and will go on till December 20, with 19 sittings, ANI reported. Since August 22 of this year, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has held five meetings regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The JPC has reviewed the work of six ministries and has heard from around 123 stakeholders, which includes representatives from six Indian states, eight Waqf boards and four minority commissions. Notably, the Waqf Act 1995, which was formed to regulate waqf properties, has long faced allegations of mismanagement, corruption and encroachments, ANI cited. According to ANI, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 seeks to bring sweeping reforms, introducing digitisation, stricter audits, transparency and legal mechanisms to reclaim illegally occupied properties. The JPC is holding a series of meetings to collect inputs from government officials, legal experts, Waqf Board members and community representatives from various states and Union Territories, in order to form the most comprehensive reform possible, ANI cited. Congress MP to move adjournment motion to discuss Adani's indictment

Ahead of the commencement of the winter session of Parliament, Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Manickam Tagore has announced that he intends to move an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to raise the issue of the indictment of industrialist Gautam Adani. In a letter addressed to the Secretary General of Lok Sabha, Tagore, who also serves as the whip for the Congress party in the lower house, gave formal notice of his intention to seek permission for an adjournment motion. He requested that the business of the house be suspended in order to discuss the urgent matter concerning the charges levelled against the Adani Group. The letter highlighted the indictment of Adani by United States authorities over allegations of "bribery, securities fraud, and wire fraud". According to the notice, the charges against the Adani Group include a scheme involving more than $265 million in bribes to secure lucrative solar power contracts and defrauding global investors. Tagore emphasised the gravity of the allegations, stating that the issue requires immediate attention in Parliament. In his communication, Tagore also criticised the Narendra Modi-led government for its silence on the matter, asserting that the lack of response undermines India's integrity, economy, and global standing. He called for accountability, questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ties with Adani and demanding that he answer queries related to their relationship. As per ANI reports, the winter session of Parliament is set to begin today with several important issues on the agenda. In addition to the Adani matter, discussions are expected on the Waqf Act (Amendment) Bill. Other bills that are scheduled for introduction, consideration, and passing include the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, the Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, and the Railways (Amendment) Bill, among others. Delhi air quality improves slightly as AQI drops to 281

The national capital woke up to a hazy morning as the Air Quality Index (AQI) showed a marginal improvement compared to the severe pollution levels recorded last week. As of 8 am on Monday, the AQI was recorded at 281, a significant dip from the hazardous levels of 400 and above that had plagued the city for several days. While the air quality remains in the 'unhealthy' category, it marks a slight improvement for Delhi residents who have been battling severe pollution. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall AQI in the city still falls in the 'poor' range, with many areas enveloped in a thin layer of haze. In the previous week, Delhi's air quality had been rated as 'severe plus' for 4-5 consecutive days, causing significant concerns about health and safety. On Monday morning, commuters could be seen making their way to work as the city was shrouded in smoke and fog. Many individuals were spotted taking their usual morning walks and jogs near Kartavya Path, despite the lingering pollution. Drone footage from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) area showed a hazy atmosphere, with the AQI still hovering in the 'poor' category. Similarly, the Akshardham Temple in the Pandav Nagar area appeared hidden beneath a veil of smog, highlighting the widespread pollution across the city. As part of efforts to combat the rising pollution levels, the Delhi government has deployed truck-mounted water sprinklers to reduce the impact of airborne particulate matter. Footage from Shaheen Bagh revealed one such truck spraying water on roads to help control dust and pollution. The AQI scale ranges from 0-50, which is considered good, to 401-500, deemed severe. With Delhi's air quality still rated at 281, the city's health risks remain significant. Further, the pollution in the Yamuna River continues to worsen, as drone visuals from the Kalindi Kunj area showed toxic foam floating on its surface. The foam has been present for several days, indicating high levels of pollution in the waterway. Residents of Delhi have reported increasing health issues, including breathing difficulties, fever, and other respiratory problems, as winter sets in. Many have called on the authorities to find a permanent solution to the growing pollution crisis. In a bid to address the situation, the Supreme Court has directed the Delhi government and the police to establish checkpoints at all 113 entry points to the city to prevent the entry of trucks. It has also appointed 13 members of the Bar as court commissioners to monitor compliance with the truck entry ban. The Supreme Court expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), highlighting the failure of the Delhi government and police to enforce the restrictions. In response to the rising pollution levels, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) activated Stage-IV of the GRAP, imposing measures such as banning truck entry and halting public construction projects. Delhi's Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, has urged the Chief Secretary, Dharmendra, to enforce the GRAP regulations strictly. He also called for better coordination across all departments to implement the Winter Action Plan-2024, with the aim of achieving long-term improvements in air quality. Minister Rai stressed that daily reports on actions taken should be submitted by all relevant departments, and violators of pollution norms must face penalties.

Jhansi hospital fire: Two more die, toll reaches 17

Two more infants rescued from a fire that ripped through the Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College and Hospital have died in Jhansi, taking the total toll in the blaze to 17, a senior official said on Sunday. Thirty-nine newborns were rescued from a devastating fire in the medical college hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit on the night of November 15. 'Well-planned conspiracy by UP CM Adityanath, BJP-RSS': Congress

In the wake of violence in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal, the Congress on Sunday alleged that the Yogi Adityanath administration is squarely responsible for killing innocents and only the BJP-RSS is guilty of "setting fire" to the peace and harmony there. The opposition party said the videos of direct firing on the protesters in Sambhal depict the horrifying result of a "well-planned conspiracy" by Adityanath and the BJP-RSS. Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said Adityanath's administration has once again shown a blatant disregard for communal harmony. "In this entire matter, the BJP neither wanted the survey to proceed nor to stop it; its sole objective was to destroy harmony," he alleged. Three people were killed and scores of others, including around 20 security personnel, were injured as the protesters opposing a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque Sambhal clashed with police on Sunday. "No citizen in Uttar Pradesh is 'safe' under CM Adityanath, who gave the reprehensible slogan of 'Batenge toh Katenge'. This is evident by the highly deplorable incidents of Sambhal today," Khera said in a statement. The videos of direct firing on the protesters in Sambhal depict the horrifying result of a "well-planned conspiracy" by Adityanath and the BJP-RSS, he alleged. Western Uttar Pradesh, which has been a symbol of goodwill and harmony for years, has today witnessed three people killed and many injured under a "well-planned conspiracy", the Congress leader said. "We say with full responsibility that the Adityanath administration is squarely responsible for killing innocents and only the BJP-RSS is guilty of setting fire to the peace and harmony of Sambhal. Modi-Yogi 'double assault' governments, which consider the minority community as second-class citizens, hurriedly got a petition filed in court," Khera said. It is public knowledge that the court ordered an immediate survey without hearing the other side, he said. "No action was taken against the rioters who accompanied the survey team. This makes it clear that after the by-elections in the state, the Yogi government has further intensified the politics of violence and hatred," he added. The Congress leader said that questions are being raised about the role of the police and the administration because many innocent people have lost their lives in this violence and more than two dozen people have been injured. "Inciting communal hatred and driving a wedge between two communities - is the DNA of BJP-RSS!" Khera said. "On one hand, there is an empty slogan of 'Ek Hai Toh Safe Hain' - on the other hand, they divide communities! On one hand, there is lie of 'Sabka Saath- Sabka Vishwas' that has been going on for a decade, on the other hand, the minority community is constantly being targeted in Uttar Pradesh," he added. The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh is destroying communal harmony and brotherhood for political gains, which is highly condemnable and objectionable, Khera said. "We appeal to the BJP to prioritize the nation's interests over their political ambitions," he added. "We want to ask Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Adityanath whether they will follow the statement of their own Mohan Bhagwat ji in June 2022 (even if it is pretentious!) in which he said that 'History is something that we cannot change. Neither today's Hindus nor today's Muslims made it, it happened at that time.... Why see Shivling in every mosque?.... Now we do not have to do any agitation..?'" Khera said. "Neither Modi ji, nor Chief Minister Adityanath nor Mohan Bhagwat ji have the answer to this!" he added. Khera said Rahul Gandhi has been continuously and stridently talked about 'Nafrat Ke Bazaar Mein Mohabbat Ki Dukaan' and in such a situation, an appeal is made to the people of Sambhal to recognise the politics of hatred, maintain mutual unity, amity and harmony, and take steps to protect their rights in a legal manner. Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh said the protesters torched vehicles and pelted stones at the police, who used tear gas and batons to disperse the mob. "Shots were fired by the miscreants... the PRO of the superintendent of police suffered a gunshot to the leg, the police circle officer was hit by pellets and 15 to 20 security personnel were injured in the violence," he said. Singh said that a constable also suffered a serious head injury, while the deputy collector fractured his leg. Internet services have been suspended in Sambhal tehsil for 24 hours and the district administration declared a holiday on November 25 for all students up to Class 12. Purported images shared on social media showed the protesters pelting stones at cops from atop buildings and in front of the Shahi Jama Masjid. Later, the police personnel were purportedly seen cornering and hitting people as they tried to disperse a large crowd in a narrow alleyway.
