HC raps Pune civic body for poor garbage disposal system

Taking cognisance of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Vineet Dhanda, requesting court’s attention towards the issue of poor garbage disposal system in the city, the Pune bench of the Bombay High Court asked the PMC to implement corrective measures to resolve the issue at once. The directive was issued on Monday.

Dhanda, an additional standing counsel of Arunachal Pradesh in the Supreme Court, had filed the PIL in the second week of February. “Living in a clean environment is a fundamental right of every citizen. But piles of untreated garbage on streets are not only causing health issues in the city, but also expose how the city just lacks a comprehensive policy for garbage disposal and waste management,” Dhanda said.

The next hearing has been scheduled for April 4. There are four respondents in the case — the PMC, district collector, divisional commissioner and chief secretary of Maharashtra.

“I am going to submit measures that can be implemented to resolve the garbage problem, using latest technology, in the next hearing. I’ll also request the court to direct PMC to immediately acquire new plots to set up advanced waste treatment units,” the advocate added.

Commenting on the court’s directive, chief of PMC solid waste management Suresh Jagtap said, “I received a copy of the directive today (Thursday). We will respond to it on April 4.”
