Have you ever seen a star from really close? Well, you could be lucky to see one soon as the premier Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) has come up with a novel idea of making cheap and affordable telescopes to facilitate you to see the tiny specks sparking bright in the sky.

Besides, the institute has named the project as My First Telescope.

What's more, IUCAA has received requests from 10 Indian universities asking it to hold workshops on easy and affordable telescopes, capable of watching the skies, at their respective campuses.

Arvind Paranjape, a scientist in-charge of science popularisation amongst the youth and children at IUCAA, while demonstrating the method of making an economical telescope, said, "About four manufacturers make telescopes in India but IUCAA uses the best lenses available.

Besides, we make Acromat telescopes as we use ordinary water pipes and plumbing material and the manufacturing cost per telescope come to around a mere Rs 2,000," Paranjape said.

He added that it takes him about five minutes to make a telescope but for a layman, the time required to make one can go up to an hour.

He added that though one can find a telescope for even Rs 300 but they can be used just for demonstrating the working of a telescope and not to see events like its going to happen on Friday.

Look up!

With 2009 being avowed as the international year of astronomy and Venus coming closest to earth this Friday, one really get into star gazing. Thus, several students have ordered readymade telescopes from IUCAA.
