Shortly after the management of Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital roped in private security personnel after a baby was kidnapped from one of the wards last month, a former security officer at the medical institution has come forward claiming that he had requested for such a move and even put forward proposals for installation of CCTV cameras in 2011.

Former security officer alleges management ignored warnings

Jagdish Dekhne claims that the management brushed aside his requests unceremoniously and resorted to harassing him thereafter, leading to him tendering his resignation in September this year. His resignation was accepted and his last working day with the hospital was October 13. Ironically, 11 days after Dekhne was relieved of his duties, the infant was kidnapped while its mother was away from her bed.u00a0

“It is a shame that the management chose to increase the number of security staff only after a baby was kidnapped. I was security officer at the hospital till October 13 this year, and had requested for more guards to be employed and even stressed on the need for CCTV cameras as early as November 2011,” Dekhne said.

He added that he had put up several proposals before the management, but they brushed them aside stating that he was asking for too much. “They also started harassing me and hence, I tendered my resignation in September,” Dekhne said.

Sources in the management stated that a proposal for hiring security personnel may have been submitted earlier, but getting sanction takes time and can only be granted after thorough analysis.

Rubbishing the allegations, a highly placed source from the hospital management, said on condition of anonymity, “These allegations are baseless and have no relation to the current action of beefing up hospital security. This man is no longer a staff of the hospital as he has already resigned from his post. These allegations seem to be merely based on his grudges against the management.”

Rs 5 lakh reward
Jasmine Naik (28) had a Caesarean delivery at around 8 pm on October 23. The next evening, she left her baby boy in her own bed and was walking between the adjacent beds when someone stole the child. Jasmine and Devdas Naik now refuse to be discharged from the hospital until their baby is found. The Bhoiwada police released sketches of the kidnapper, but no leads have emerged so far.

With no news coming in despite the police investigating the case for the past 15 days, the couple has now decided to post a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information leading to the arrest of the kidnapper or information about their baby. With help from family and friends, Devdas has decided to print 3,000 pamphlets to be distributed across the city.

“I am getting pamphlets printed in an attempt to gather any possible information about my baby. Around 20 friends will be helping to distribute and paste these pamphlets across Western, Central and Harbour line stations and in and around slum areas. I hope I get some clues about the whereabouts of my child.”u00a0
