Andheri's Across D Coast is a delight for vegetarians who like to experiment and like to take a break from the dal-chawal routine

The cultural multiplicity of Mumbai city is a starkly palpable influence on the local vegetarian restaurant industry.

Where else but in Mumbai, can you find strictly vegetarian dining, be it Chinese, Mediterranean, Mexican, Thai, American, International Jain Fusion, or Mughlai restaurants? Mumbai's vegetarian food can be as creative and diverse as the city's inhabitants. As if out to reiterate this point, Across d Coast opens it's doors for a distinctly vegetarian experience.

The Chi-Lee Potatoes (Rs110) are the first to arrive with a delightful combination of Chili Flakes, Crushed Garlic, Salt and Organic Sesame Oil. Deep-fried and perfectly golden brown, the Chi-Lee Potatoes were a melt-in-your-mouth delight.

Of course, a Mexican restaurant's review would be incomplete without tasting the Nachos (Rs 135). The Tortilla chips arrived soon as a snack in their simplest form, covered in melted cheese. Sadly, the chips were slightly disappointing and far removed from their rightful association with Tex-Mex cuisine. Some chips stick together making them difficult when you scoop salsa on it or try and take it to your mouth. It's eaten best when extra crisp so they hold. Instead you get chips sitting in a puddle of gummy, chopped vegetables.

For the main course, the Vegetable Paprika (Rs 195) was more Thai and bland, than hot and Mexican and served with an assortment of vegetables and rice. Topped with a sprinkle of chopped garlic, it looked for lack of better choice of words, like a Paneer Stroganoff.

Traditionally, the Chimichanga (Rs 190), or chimi, is a burrito prepared with a choice of meat, vegetables, and spices. Deep-fried to a golden perfection, and served on a bed of lettuce with cheese and mild sauce. The smart chefs at Across d Coast take their chimis very seriously and prefer to serve large, overstuffed (vegetarian) versions. None of the tortilla comes apart during the frying; the dish makes for a very pleasurable experience.
