Enjoy a day of 'slow' food

Terra Madre Day is an annual event celebrated on December 10 every year by the Slow Food network around the world. Slow Food is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic member-supported organisation that was founded in 1989 to counteract fast food and fast life.

India has one of the richest culinary traditions in the world that risks being lost in the global gluttony of fast food chains. Organisations like Navdanya are inviting people to share the philosophy of eating local. This year, the event extends to December 19 and expresses itself through avenues such as films, conferences, stores and The Farmers' Market. Literally meaning Mother Earth, Terra Madre looks to celebrate traditional methods of growing, cooking and consuming food.

"These are small steps to creating a global revolution with better food systems that can only be promoted through consumption and support of the local food producer," says eco-nutritionist Kavita Mukhi, who is involved with The Farmers' Market in Mumbai.

Catch a screening of The Power of Community, a film about how Cuba went organic and the effect it had on society there. The film will be followed by an intensive panel discussion with speakers such as Dr Colin Gonsalves, senior advocate and founder of Human Rights Law Network, Dr Amol Nirban from Ecocert, slow foodie Vikram Doctor, along with organic farmers Sanjay Pawar and Sadu Bhau. The celebrations will continue post the discussion with a musical show and fire dancers.
