The move was part of a "well thought out strategy" to counter any last minute glitches that could cancel the candidature of Jaaferi on technical grounds during scrutiny of papers, Aam Aadmi Party state spokesman Vaibhav Maheshwari told IANS.
"There is nothing new in this as Shastri has been fielded as a cover candidate in case something goes wrong with our party candidate (Jaaferi) from this important seat," he said.
Jaaferi has been camping in the city for the past few days and has been seeking support of the people as he takes on political heavyweights - Rajnath Singh (Bharatiya Janata Party), Rita Bahuguna Joshi (Congress), Abhishek Misra (Samajwadi Party) and Nakul Dubey (Bahujan Samaj Party). Lucknow will vote April 30.
