Six-laning of highway from Dehu Road to Satara to begin by end of year

The highway from the city to Bangalore is to be made a six-lane road up to Satara, and work on the project is expected to begin by the end of this year.
Dehu Road near the city is the point from which the six-laning work on NH-4 will be taken up.
Confirming the development, D P Majhi, media manager, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said all pre-construction work concerning the project has already been taken care of.
"The tender for the project has already been floated and a major construction company based in Mumbai has received the tender. We are expecting the work to start in six months," said Majhi.
The Rs 600-crore project will take two-and-a-half years to complete.
"The construction company after completion of the project will take care of the lanes for the next 25 years and then it will be handed over to the government," said Majhi.
Other projects
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is also working on various projects, which will be on simultaneously as the six-laning project is underway.
MIDC Superintendent Engineer Rajeev Parale said, "The National Highways Authority is ready with the paperwork. We are in talks with the authority regarding other projects, which will go on along with this one. The Hinjewadi flyover is one such project."
Officials said the addition of two more lanes to the four lanes today will help in better traffic flow management.
In 2002 the Pune-Bangalore highway was widened, a project that was part of the Centre's Suvarn Chatushkon Yojana (Golden Quadrilateral Project) that was expected to boost development of the region. The number of vehicles that use NH-4 every day is between 1.2 lakh to 1.5 lakh.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manoj Patil said, "The carrying capacity of the highway has already been exhausted, which will lead to traffic congestion and accidents. If more roads are built and proper traffic discipline is followed, then it will help commuters."
