Chandigarh: In a major step towards curbing the menace of stray dogs, estimated to be 25 lakh in Haryana, the state government has decided to sterilise them. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has earmarked Rs 30 crore for mass vaccination and sterilisation and the programme will start from Gurgaon and Hisar divisions.


The government has decided to implement National Rabies Control Programme (NTCP)- Animal Component in the state under which immunisation of stray dogs will be done and scientific methods will be adopted to sterilise the canine.


The matter was taken up at a meeting of Haryana Chief Secretary D S Dhesi and Chairman of Animal Welfare Board of India, Major General R M Kharb here today, said an official release. Two monitoring and coordinating committees will be constituted for ensuring total transparency in the implementation of the programme.


The state-level monitoring-cum coordinating committee will have Principal Secretaries of Animal Husbandry, Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats and Rural Development. Similarly, Divisional Commissioner of the respective division will look after the overall coordination of District Level Monitoring cum Coordinating Committee.
