Despite the ban of bullock-cart race by Supreme court in Pune village people try to break the norm and had organised around 160 such bullock cart racing competition near the house of Member of Parliament in Pune on Monday.

The incident took place at Kurwadi village in Khed, Ghodegaon. Prior to the ban by the apex court in Pune, bullock-cart races were regularly held in Bhosari, Khed and the adjoining rural areas. These events were also a key feature of the Pune Festival organised during the Ganapati festival and the village annual festival called ‘Jatra’.
Sub-inspector Sunil Godse, of Manchar police station, which falls under the jurisdiction of Pune rural police, said, “The incident took place on Monday noon. We received information about such bullock cart races and, with our seniors, we rushed to the spot and immediately stopped the races. We barricaded the roads due to which the bullocks could not move ahead. We are probing the case and soon will register a complaint for contempt the court ruling.”
According to sources, “The village was organising their annual fest ‘Jatra’ for Lord Bhairoba and had organised a grand bullock cart race for the same. There was huge participation from nearby villages as well. The competition began at around 10.30 am and, around 12 noon, the police rushed to the spot and immediately asked the carts to move to their respective villages. Many villagers were not allowed to click pictures as it all happened near MP Shivajirao Adalrao Patil’s house.”
When contacted MP Patil said, “Let me make it clear. It was not a bullock-cart race but bullocks were used by villagers for procession purpose for the annual festival. We respect judiciary and we cannot violate the norms.”
What the rulebook says
The apex court bench of Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Pinaki Chandra Ghose, upheld a July 11, 2011, notification of the ministry of environment and forest that banned exhibition or training of bulls as performing animals.
