Pakistan root of terrorism, Congress responsible, says Amit Shah

Participating in a special discussion in the Parliament on Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam terrorist attack, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that Pakistan was the root of all terrorism, and that the neighbouring nation was a mistake committed by the Congress.  “Had they rejected Partition, there would have been no Pakistan,” he added. Shah said a blunder by the main opposition party led to the creation of Pakistan and claimed that Pak-occupied Kashmir was the legacy of first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Shah also slammed successive Congress governments for failing to capitalise on opportunities to reclaim lost territories from Pakistan and wondered how the opposition party was targeting the Modi government for not launching an all-out war against Islamabad. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge “All roots of terrorism lead back to Pakistan. And Pakistan itself is the result of the Congress party’s blunder. Had they not accepted the idea of partition, Pakistan would never have come into existence,” Shah said. Had the Congress opposed partition, the problem of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir would never have occurred, he said. Talking about Operation Sindoor, he said Indian forces attacked targets 100 km inside Pakistan and India could expose state sponsored terrorism in Pakistan. He said India’s armed forces crippled Pakistan’s defence systems in such a manner that the neighbouring country had no choice but to request India to halt attacks. “In 1948, Indian armed forces were in a decisive position to take back Pakistan occupied Kashmir but then PM Jawaharlal Nehru declared unilateral ceasefire,” he said. In 1971, Shah said, 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered and India had 15,000 sq km of Pakistan territory under control, but still PoK was not taken back. During the 1962 war with China, then PM Nehru bade goodbye to Assam in a speech on Akashvani, he said. Shah said between 2005 and 2011, there were 27 terrorist attacks but what did the Congress government do, they just sent dossiers to Pakistan. Shah said the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) was scrapped by the then Manmohan Singh government in its first cabinet meeting after coming to power in 2004. “The country deserves to know who benefitted from Congress repealing POTA? Those opposed to POTA will never appreciate Narendra Modi’s anti-terror policies,” he said.  Pahalgam terrorists killed Shah claimed that three of the terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam massacre have been eliminated by security forces in a joint operation by the Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police near Srinagar. The terrorists were killed Monday in an operation dubbed Mahadev but officials had held back in identifying them conclusively as the Pahalgam attackers. Shah said the identity of the terrorists was confirmed by those detained for sheltering and providing them with food ahead of the Pahalgam attack. The empty cartridges found at Pahalgam and those after test firing by the guns recovered from the terrorists were matched by the forensic lab, Shah said. The ballistic report is with him, he added. Shah said security forces had recovered Pakistani voter IDs of two of the killed terrorists as well as chocolates made in Pakistan and the weapons.Agencies Govt must accept lapses: Kharge Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said Amit Shah must take responsibility for the “security lapse” which led to the Pahalgam terror attack, and demanded that accountability be fixed. The Congress chief attacked the government and took a jibe at PM Narendra Modi’s unscheduled visit to Pakistan in 2015. Kharge further said the PM should have been present at an all-party meet instead of campaigning in Bihar, and questioned Modi’s sincerity towards national security. Demanding accountability, the he said the government should admit its ‘lapses’ and ‘failure’ in stopping terror attacks. He further accused  the Modi govt of being arrogant.  Operation Sindoor will continue: PM Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asserted that Operation Sindoor will continue stating, it is a notice to Pakistan that India will always act till Pakistan stops attacks. No country in the world has stopped India from taking action in its defence against terrorism, he said. But lamented that while the nation got support from the entire world, the Congress could not stand behind the valour of the country’s soldiers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks in Lok Sabha. PIC/PTI Modi said Pakistani airbases hit by India “are still in ICU” and the masterminds of the April 22 terror attack are still having sleepless nights. “India got support from the entire world, but it is unfortunate that the Congress did not support the valour of our soldiers. Congress leaders targeted me for political gains but their frivolous statements ended up discouraging our brave soldiers,” said Modi. The PM noted that India called out Pakistan’s nuclear bluff and showed the world that “we will not bow down to nuclear blackmail”. “Pakistan knows they have to pay a huge price for any misadventure. India will come for them.” Govt lacks political will: Rahul Gandhi Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused the government of lacking the political will to support the Indian armed forces and claimed it revealed sensitive details about Operation Sindoor to Pakistan. “Rajnath Singh said Operation Sindoor began at 1.05 AM and that by 1.35 AM, India had already called Pakistan to inform them that we had hit non-military targets and that we did not want escalation,” Gandhi said. The Congress leader claimed that the DGMO was instructed to seek a ceasefire just 30 minutes after the launch of the operation. Gandhi also accused the government of undermining the morale and effectiveness of the armed forces by imposing limitations. Why was war stopped? Attacking PM Modi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday said leadership is not just about taking credit but also taking responsibility, and claimed that US President Donald Trump announcing the ceasefire between India and Pakistan reflects the PM’s “irresponsibility”. The Congress MP said HM Shah talked about Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, even her mother’s tears but did not answer “why the war was halted at a time when the enemy had nowhere to go”. Was no government agency in the know that such a dastardly terror attack is going to happen and a plot is being hatched in Pakistan, she asked.  “It is a big failure of our government and intelligence agencies.” This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Operation Sindoor got support of many nations but not Congress: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a blistering attack on the Congress-led Opposition, accusing it of giving a “clean chit” to Pakistan over the Pahalgam terror attack and mocking the party for failing to support India’s war on terror. Dismissing Congress’s claims of foreign policy failure following Operation Sindoor, PM Modi told the Parliament that not a single major country opposed India's military response to Pakistan. “Out of 193 countries, only three supported Pakistan -- either through dialogue or by other means. All nations and organisations, including BRICS, stood by India’s military strikes and our fight against terror,” said the Prime Minister. Taking a jibe at the Congress, PM Modi remarked, “We received the support of our citizens and backing from the international community, but unfortunately, the armed forces did not receive support from the Congress party.” PM Modi went on to accuse the grand old party of celebrating the Pahalgam terror attack, hoping it would provide ammunition to attack the government and damage his image. “They tried to score political points at the cost of innocent lives. Their actions dampened the morale of our armed forces and undermined their courage,” he added. The Prime Minister also warned that information warfare and digital narratives now play a central role in modern conflict, urging caution in using technology to distort facts and mislead the public on matters of national importance. Doubling down on his criticism, PM Modi accused the Congress of being ideologically aligned with Pakistan. “Today, the Congress party lacks issues of its own and is forced to borrow its agenda from external sources.” He criticised Congress leaders for repeatedly demanding proof of India’s surgical strikes, only to later claim that similar operations were carried out during their tenure in power. “It’s a relief they didn’t try to take credit for Operation Sindoor because such air strikes never happened during their time,” he said, in a pointed rebuke to the Opposition. PM Modi asserted that the Congress party has a long-standing habit of questioning and criticising the armed forces, even at the cost of national security. “There’s a visible negativity towards our armed forces. It’s an old Congress habit to find fault in every action they take,” PM Modi said. (with IANS inputs)

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange hospitalised in Jalna

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange was admitted to a private hospital in Maharashtra's Jalna district on Tuesday after he complained of weakness and discomfort, a doctor at the facility said, reported the PTI. He was admitted to a hospital in Shahagad in the evening. Manoj Jarange suffered from hyperacidity, vomiting, and low blood pressure, a doctor from Sakunde Hospital said, according to the PTI. The medical team provided necessary treatment, and his condition is now stable. He will be discharged after observation, the hospital informed. Earlier in the day, the activist, who has undertaken several hunger strikes demanding a reservation for the Maratha community, warned of a fresh agitation on August 29. Jarange on Tuesday accused the Maharashtra government of failing to fulfil its promises to the Maratha community and warned of launching a fresh hunger strike in Mumbai on August 29, reported PTI.  Speaking to media persons at Antarwali Sarthi village in Jalna district, Jarange alleged that the government has deceived the Maratha community. The activist has launched multiple hunger strikes demanding that all Marathas be recognised as Kunbis, an agrarian caste classified under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category and reservation in government jobs and education for the politically influential community, reported PTI.  He has consistently advocated for the implementation of historical records, such as the Bombay, Satara, and Hyderabad gazettes, which he claims provide documented evidence of the Maratha community being classified as Kunbis. "Four major demands of the Marathas, which the government assured would be implemented, have not been fulfilled. The government has once again deceived the community," Jarange said. He warned of undertaking a fresh hunger strike in Mumbai on August 29 and launching a march to the city, as reported by PTI.  "We have been patient for the last two years. Now the time has come to rise. I appeal to all Marathas, don't sit silently. We must fight for our rights," he said, urging community members to wrap up their farming activities in two months and prepare to march to Mumbai. The activist strongly criticised the administration for its failure to issue the government gazette related to the Sage Soyare notification and for not implementing the historical gazettes of Bombay, Satara, and Hyderabad. He claimed that over 58 lakh documents have been gathered to establish that Kunbis and Marathas are the same community and demanded that Kunbi certificates be issued based on this evidence, reported PTI.  While acknowledging the Shinde Committee's efforts in uncovering key documents, the activist criticised government officials for failing to issue Kunbi certificates despite the available evidence, reported PTI.  Jarange also slammed the state government for not withdrawing cases filed against Maratha reservation protesters, calling it a betrayal of the community’s trust. "I will not back down this time. The government must act or face the consequences," he said, reported PTI.  (with PTI inputs)

Operation Sindoor: Pakistan airbases hit by India are still in ICU, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the Parliament on Operation Sindoor and said that the Pakistani airbases hit by India were still in the ICU. PM Modi, while speaking on Operation Sindoor in Lok Sabha, said, "The world saw the strength of self-reliant India during Operation Sindoor. Drones and missiles made in India exposed the capabilities of Pakistani arms and ammunition." PM Modi further said that the Indian armed forces taught them such a lesson that the 'masters of terrorism' are still losing their sleep over it. He said, "We destroyed terror sites deep inside Pakistan within 22 minutes to avenge Pahalgam terror attack." PM Modi asserted that the Indian armed forces taught such a lesson to those behind the Pahalgam attack that the "masters of terrorism" are still having sleepless nights. Responding to the two-day debate on Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha, the prime minister said the attack was aimed at instigating riots in India, and the country's unity has foiled the attempt. "I stand here to make a case for India, and to show a mirror to those who do not understand this. I had said that we will teach the terrorists and their masters a befitting lesson which will be beyond their imagination. "We have complete trust in the capabilities of our armed forces and they were given a free hand to respond," he said. PM Modi noted that Pakistan had some inkling of Indian action and had started issuing nuclear threats, but could do nothing when terror targets were hit. "It (Pahalgam attack) was a conspiracy to instigate riots in India and the country's unity foiled that attempt. When I speak of this Parliament session being a Vijayotsav, it is of destroying the headquarters of terror," he said, reported the PTI. PM Modi said that the US VP was told that if Pakistan attacks India, our attack would be much bigger as we will respond to bullets with cannons. He said that India's air defence systems are now being talked about across the world for the way they repulsed Pakistan attacks. (with PTI inputs)

US delegation to visit India on Aug 25 for next round of talks for trade pact

A United States delegation is set to visit India on August 25 for the sixth round of negotiations regarding the proposed bilateral trade agreement between the two nations, a government official confirmed on Tuesday, reported the PTI. Although the US team is scheduled to arrive at the end of next month, both sides are actively engaging in discussions to resolve outstanding issues and potentially finalise an interim trade deal before August 1. The date marks the end of a temporary suspension of additional tariffs imposed under former US President Donald Trump, which included a 26 per cent tariff on select Indian goods. “The US team is visiting for the sixth round of talks,” the official said, indicating ongoing momentum despite the tight timeline. While prospects for an immediate breakthrough remain uncertain, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer recently commented that more rounds of negotiation are required before a trade pact with India can be reached. “We continue to speak with our Indian counterparts. We've always had very constructive discussions with them,” Greer told CNBC on Monday, according to the PTI. The fifth round of discussions was concluded in Washington last week, with India’s chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce, meeting with Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia. Both sides are aiming to conclude an interim deal before August 1, even as broader talks toward a more comprehensive agreement are expected to extend into autumn (September-October). The urgency stems from a April 2 announcement by Trump, which imposed high reciprocal tariffs on a number of countries, including India. Although the implementation was initially delayed for 90 days until July 9, and later extended to August 1, as per the PTI. India has taken a firm stance, particularly on US demands for greater access to its agriculture and dairy markets. New Delhi has traditionally refrained from offering duty concessions in the dairy sector under any trade agreement. Several Indian farmers’ associations have also urged the government to keep agriculture out of the negotiations entirely. India, meanwhile, is pushing for the removal of additional tariffs (26 per cent), as well as relief on steel and aluminium (50 per cent) and automotive imports (25 per cent). These have become key sticking points in the trade dialogue, the PTI reported. In return, the US is seeking duty concessions on industrial goods, automobiles -- especially electric vehicles -- wines, petrochemical products, agricultural items, dairy goods, apples, tree nuts, and genetically modified crops. India is also seeking duty relief for several of its labour-intensive export sectors, including textiles, gems and jewellery, leather products, garments, plastics, chemicals, shrimp, oil seeds, grapes, and bananas. India has reserved its right under WTO (World Trade Organisation) norms to impose retaliatory duties if needed, in response to the continuation of US tariffs. Trade between the two countries remains robust. India’s merchandise exports to the US rose by 22.8 per cent, reaching USD 25.51 billion in the April-June quarter of the current financial year. Imports from the US increased by 11.68 per cent to USD 12.86 billion during the same period. (with PTI inputs)

Operation Sindoor debate: JP Nadda apologises for 'Mental Balance' remark

The Rajya Sabha witnessed heated exchanges between the Opposition and treasury benches after Leader of the House JP Nadda made some objectionable remarks against Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, which he later withdrew and apologised for, reported news agency PTI. Rising soon after Kharge spoke for over an hour during the discussion on 'Operation Sindoor' and the Pahalgam terror attack, Nadda first accused him of "losing his mental balance" after Kharge made certain remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Nadda demanded that Kharge's comments on the Prime Minister be expunged from the records, stating they were made in a "flow of emotions", reported ANI. However, Kharge and the Opposition benches strongly objected to Nadda's "mental balance" remark and demanded an apology. Kharge also stated that Nadda was one of the ministers in the NDA government whom he respected, but expressed his shame that Nadda had made such comments against him, reiterating his demand for an apology. Nadda soon rose to state that he had already withdrawn his words and offered an apology. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the most popular leader in the world, and not just the BJP takes pride in it; the entire nation does," Nadda said, adding that Kharge had not respected the Prime Minister's stature and had made objectionable remarks. "I have already taken back my words, but if they have hurt his (Kharge's) feelings, I apologise for the same. However, Kharge did cross his limits and made certain remarks against the Prime Minister in passion and out of emotion, which need to be expunged," Nadda reiterated. "He has long experience. The choice of words used during his speech did not reflect his stature. The kind of words used by him were below his stature. Therefore, I urge you to expunge those words," Nadda urged the chair. Meanwhile, in a separate development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that three of the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam attack have been eliminated by security forces in a joint operation involving the Army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police near Srinagar. While participating in the special discussion on 'Operation Sindoor' during the ongoing Monsoon Session, Home Minister Shah stated that the terrorists were killed under 'Operation Mahadev' on Monday. They have been identified as Suleman alias Faizal, Afghani, and Jibran. "While Suleman was an A-category commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Afghani was also an A-category Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, Jibran too was a notorious and wanted terrorist. All these three terrorists involved in the killing of our citizens at Baisaran valley in Pahalgam have now been eliminated," he confirmed. (With inputs from PTI)

Operation Sindoor: Rahul Gandhi accuses govt of weak political will

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, speaking in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, launched a strong criticism of the government’s handling of Operation Sindoor, accusing it of lacking the political will to fully support the Indian armed forces and even revealing sensitive information to Pakistan, reported the PTI. Speaking in Lok Sabha, he sharply criticised the government's military response to the attack, raising questions about Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's statements on the floor of the House. Referring to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s earlier statement in the House, Gandhi said, “Rajnath Singh stated that Operation Sindoor commenced at 1:05 am and by 1:35 am, India had already informed Pakistan that only non-military targets had been hit and that escalation was not intended.” “These are not my words, but those of India’s Defence Minister,” he added, questioning the rationale behind such disclosures so soon after the operation began, according to the PTI. Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) was directed to seek a ceasefire merely 30 minutes after the start of the operation, implying that political leaders undermined the armed forces' operational freedom. “If you want to utilise the Indian armed forces, there must be complete political will. They must be given full freedom to act,” he said, as per the PTI. He further accused the government of effectively "surrendering" by limiting the scope of the military response. “You told Pakistan at 1:35 in the night that you were not going to target their military or air defence systems. That is not operational freedom; that is surrender,” Rahul Gandhi stated, the news agency reported. The Congress leader also linked the reported loss of Indian aircraft during the operation to political decisions rather than military failings. “These aircraft were lost because political leadership had restricted the armed forces by deciding not to strike military or air defence installations in Pakistan,” he claimed, reported the PTI. Quoting India’s defence attache in Indonesia, Gandhi said that Indian pilots had been instructed not to attack Pakistan's air defence systems -- highlighting, in his view, the government's lack of resolve in executing a robust military response. TCS layoffs may harm long-term growth, warns Jefferies report

The recent report of layoffs by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), involving the decision to lay off 2 per cent of its workforce, approximately 12,000 employees, as part of cost-cutting measures, could negatively impact the company in the long run, according to a report by Jefferies. The report noted that this move reflects the company's increasing focus on conserving margins amidst persistent growth challenges. It is also the third such cost-saving action taken by TCS in the past three months. Earlier, the IT giant deferred wage hikes in April 2025 and introduced new benching guidelines in June 2025. The updated benching policy now limits the non-billable period of an employee to just 35 days in a year. Jefferies stated, "Focus on cost-cutting may hurt TCS in longer-run...: The move by TCS reflects its growing focus on conserving margins amid continued growth pressures." According to the report, TCS has historically not been among the top paymasters in the industry, but it has managed to maintain lower-than-average attrition levels due to its focus on providing long-term career growth and job stability. However, the report cautioned that the current round of layoffs could damage employee morale in the near term and potentially lead to execution slippages. In the longer term, such cost-cutting measures might result in a sharp rise in attrition, similar to the trend witnessed at Cognizant between 2020 and 2022. While the layoffs at TCS appear to be more company-specific, Jefferies highlighted that the overall net hiring in the IT industry has remained weak since FY22. This is mainly due to a prolonged moderation in the demand outlook. Cost optimization has become a key factor for winning new deals in the IT sector, with clients increasingly demanding productivity improvements. This trend is also being driven by the growing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is enabling firms to either do more work with the same number of employees or deliver the same results with fewer workers. The second scenario naturally results in layoffs, especially as redeployment of employees on the bench takes longer during periods of weak demand. The report also pointed out that IT companies with slowing growth are already operating at higher utilization rates, meaning they are maintaining thinner benches. On the other hand, firms with a stronger growth outlook are still working with relatively lower utilization levels.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. NIA begins probe into encounter of Pahalgam attack mastermind near Srinagar

In another significant move by the National Investigation Agency, a team of NIA sleuths on Tuesday launched a probe into the killing of the alleged mastermind of the Pahalgam terror attack and his two associates in an encounter with security forces near Srinagar, officials said here. As reported by the news agency PTI, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) team arrived at the Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar early Tuesday for the identification of the bodies of the three terrorists. Earlier on Monday, the Army's elite para commandos gunned down Sulieman, alias Asif. Asif was one of the alleged masterminds of the April 22 attack. However, along with Asif, his two other close aides were also eliminated in an encounter at Mulnar in the Harwan area near Dachigam National Park in Srinagar. With security forces launching a surprise action, codenamed 'Operation Mahadev,' a technical signal indicating the use of a satellite phone that was used by the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack helped the soldiers and the agencies to act swiftly and eliminate the terrorist. As reported by PTI, the other terrorists killed in the action have been identified as Jibran. Jibran was allegedly another terrorist who was also involved in the Sonamarg Tunnel attack last year, along with Hamza Afghani. Earlier, as many as 26 people, mostly tourists, were shot dead by terrorists at Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam, which prompted the armed forces to launch Operation Sindoor. Amid Operation Mahadev, the bodies of the slain terrorists were brought from the encounter site to the PCR in Srinagar late on Monday. The officials, while addressing the elimination of the terrorists, said that “the NIA team are taking witnesses in batches of two to three people "for ensuring a cent per cent confirmation that the slain terrorists include Sulieman Shah", as cited by news agency PTI.  He further added that, “Meanwhile, the operation is ongoing as intelligence inputs have suggested the presence of another group of terrorists in the area.” Jibran was allegedly involved in the terror strike at the Sonamarg tunnel project at Gagangir in October last year. Seven people, including a doctor, were killed in the attack. It has also been highlighted that an M4 carbine rifle, two AK rifles, and other munitions were also seized from the site of Monday's encounter.  (With inputs from PTI)
