New Delhi: The Delhi government on Tuesday junked the controversial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor - a much-vaunted project of the then Shiela Dikshit-led Congress government in the capital.

"In the wake of public demand and increase in accidents (on the stretch), we have decided that the BRT be scrapped. The cabinet has given in-principle nod to scrap it," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said here.

Sisodia, however, clarified that the Aam Aadmi Party government was not against the BRT as a concept.

"To strengthen public transport, things like BRT are needed. There are several successful models. But our model failed in Delhi. It's design and implementation was faulty," he added.

On the lines of Colombia's Bogota model, the 5.8 km-long stretch in south Delhi was opened in 2008 as a solution to the national capital's traffic woes. However, it turned out be a nightmare for motorists as during peak hours the traffic remained choked in side lanes.

The three-time chief minister Dikshit had stuck to her stand of not removing the BRT despite public criticism and demands.
