Cost
Teens these days are painfully brand conscious. Fun, funky is their mantra. As a parent, you can choose all the major items like the desk, bed and window treatments. Then let your teenager personalise the room with low cost novelties like beanbags, futons, funky lamps and colourful bed sheets of his/her own choice.
Finishes
Painted walls are a practical choice. Paint has a fresh, contemporary feel, and isn't too expensive either. If the fabrics and furniture have already been decided, then coordinating the paint with the lightest fabric is a good idea. Wallpapers are a great alternative but not recommended if one wishes to cover majority of the wall with posters, paintings, etc.
Raw finishes like brick and concrete sometimes work well for a teen's bedroom. In general, teens want either a very dramatic room or one that looks like a studio apartment. If you are into loud music, using a carpet as a floor finish and light acoustic treatment for separating walls isn't a bad idea.
A versatile idea is to decorate using shades of denim blue. Denim is a fabric that immediately imparts the feeling of comfort and is also young. Pillow covers and room furniture fabrics can be accentuated with denim or even made out of that fabric. The old torn pair of jeans can be used as a wall hanging. Consult with your teenage son or daughter about what s/he prefers.
Themes
One can also decorate the rooms around rustic themes, sports, film, hobbies, music, etc. that define ones personality. Contemporary styles use black and white as an anchor to set off a dramatic look, apart from being dictated with clean lines, sculptural furniture, and geometric artwork.
Furniture
We suggest you spend a good amount of money and creativity on making as storage space as possible. Include open and hidden displays, cabinets, racks for CDs, DVD, books etc.u00a0 Beds with under storage can also provide space to store or display items.
Bunk beds are a great option for siblings sharing a small room as they free up a lot of space. Sinking furniture into or closer to the floor can help add scale to a space.
