Rain Man is one of those movies that stays with you long after you have hit the 'Off' button on your remote.
Charles Sanford aka Charlie (Tom Cruise) is an automobile dealer, hustler and fraud. This selfish young guy aspires to be rich, taking the easy way out in life. He discovers that his rich father died and left behind a car for him and $3 million dollars for the brother he didn't know he had. Charlie's bro Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) is an autistic savant who lives in an institution.u00a0
Charlie wants the money. He kidnaps Raymond with the intention of getting his share of the cash, and the two head out on a cross-country journey. Raymond is a prodigy who is a genius in mathematical calculations a human calculator.u00a0 But he has phobias about flying, noise and more. He drives Charlie up the wall. But the hustler ropes in Raymond to rake in the moolah by taking him to casinos, where he makes money using Raymond's awesome abilities.u00a0
But, somewhere along the journey, Charlie is deeply moved by Raymond's private world. Though irritated by Raymond's hysterical behaviour, Charlie changes his perspective towards life. Heu00a0 faces his shortcomings and learns to appreciate small joys of life.
Raymond Babbitt's character is based on several real-life autistic persons, at a time when little was known about the condition even in the medical community. This movie did throw light on this neglected field of science and human condition and encouraged many parents to take care of their autistic children.
Rain Man took Academy honours for Best Picture, director, screenplay, and actor (Dustin Hoffman) in 1988.
