Exactly a year after a 27-year-old man committed suicide in August 2013, officials of the Chakan police station recovered Yogesh Shyamrao Gade’s skeleton from an under-construction building, located on Chakan-Ambethan Road, on Sunday.

The incident came to light after workers spotted something suspicious in one of the flats and upon investigating further, discovered a skeleton. They immediately informed Chakan police. During primary investigation, police officials recovered a suicide note, tiffin box and decomposed clothes from the spot, which helped them assert the deceased’s identity. Officials said Gade was debt-ridden and hence took the drastic step.

Investigation officer Shyam Pardeshi said, “We have sent the skeleton for DNA test and face mapping. As per the suicide note recovered from the spot, the skeleton belongs to Gade. But to ensure that there are no goof-ups, we sent it for further tests. He (Gade) had locked the door of the flat from inside before taking his life. Since the building was under-construction, no one was able to detect the stench of the decomposing corpse.”

He added that in July 2013, Gade had lodged a complaint of being robbed of R18,500 while he was trying to withdraw money from an ATM booth at Kohinoor Centre in Chakan. A week after he lodged the complaint, Gade was attacked by unidentified persons.

“When we called Gade’s parents to inform them about his death, they told us that after he failed to return home from work in
August 2013 they lodged a missing person complaint. Despite search operation, he remained untraceable,” Pardeshi said.
Officials said while Gade’s belongings have been handed over to his family, the skeleton would be handed over only after receiving the DNA test report.
