Manish, 16, (not his real name) a student of Mahant Shivdas Vidyalaya, slit the throat of his classmate Munna (not his real name), also aged around 16 years. Under the law, both the attacker and the killed being juveniles cannot be named.
Munna's body was recovered on January 6 from the shrubs in Para village.
"During an enquiry, it was revealed that Munna was last seen with his friend Manish on the outskirts of the village. We interrogated Manish Sunday evening when he admitted to killing Munna to get his mobile phone for listening to songs," inspector Anil Tiwari told reporters Monday in Azamgarh district, some 300 km from here.
"We have recovered the knife used in the murder. As the accused is a minor, he will be presented before the juvenile court and could later be sent to a juvenile home," Tiwari added, declining to comment further.
According to police, Manish took Munna from his house Jan 6 on the pretext of discussing something.
