Two police constables nabbed a fake cop duo yesterday, while they were extorting money from vendors and the public in the busy K R Market area.
Noushad Ahmed (25), and Shoukat Basha (24), were confronted by real cops and tried to flee, but were apprehended with the help of the public.
Both worked as battery mechanics at a privateu00a0 company. The duo came up with the idea of extorting money from vendors, who were flouting rules, after visiting the Kalasipalya area a few months ago.
They used to approach roadside vendors on a daily basis and collect protection money by threatening to seize their goods for encroaching on footpaths. They would also fine the general public for littering, jay walking and even blackmail prostitutes and pimps using the same ruse.
"They used to claim that they were new recruits from the local police station or cops from the neighboring stations, when asked to prove their identity," Head Constable Siddaraju, who apprehended them, said.
Their luck ran out when Siddaraju along with his colleague Lokesh confronted the duo accidentally during patrolling. "We have recovered some money from them, which they have extorted," he said adding that the duo have been remanded to judicial custody.
