It seems silly mistakes committed by the assailants in the Shekhar Waghmare murder case saved the city police from further embarrassment barely a week after the Bombay High Court expressed its unhappiness over the number of undetected cases in the city.
Waghmare, district president of the Akhil Bharatiya Sena (ABS), was shot dead about 11 am on Thursday. Within 24 hours, the police said they had cracked the case.
After the high court directed the city police to submit a detailed report on cases that had gone undetected for a year, the image of the police had taken a beating, and the police were determined to solve the Waghmare murder as soon as possible.u00a0
Sources said the eight people allegedly involved in Waghmare's murder were traced easily because Raj Yadav (32), the man from Dhankawadi who the police said owned the car the suspects abandoned after the crime, left his visiting cards in the vehicle. The visiting cards helped the police trace the alleged assailants.
Minutes after the crime, the police had recovered the red Maruti Zen in Pandavnagar.
"The Shivajinagar police got working on the mobile numbers written on Yadav's visiting cards and traced the suspects," said a source.
Soon after the assailants realised the police were tracing them and switched off their cell phones, blocking the police search. Then the police had another lucky break ufffd an informer tipped them off about the whereabouts of the suspects, and the police were able to zero in on them.
On the day of the murder, the investigating team had detained Shashikant Taware, Yadav and three others after Waghmare's wife Savita filed a complaint in which she said she suspected Taware's hand in her husband's murder.
The decision to nominate Waghmare as district president of ABS, a party headed by Mumbai don Arun Gawli, had upset Taware.
On Friday night the police arrested the remaining suspects, identified as Suresh Taware (42) of Yerwada, Jagannath Kale (31) of Laxmi Nagar in Haveli, Sanjay Waghmare (24) of Bibvewadi, Shel Pimpal, Pabal Road. A day before, the police had arrested Taware, Yadav, Prakash Chaudhari (23) of Sinhagad Road, Pravin Kamble (30) and Nagesh Chate (23).
All eight suspects have been remanded in police custody till July 27.
