Builder murder probe suffers bail setback

Suspects released on bail as cops fail to file chargesheet

The four suspects who were arrested in the case of extortion of slain builder Nikhil Rane are out on bail because the police failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 90 days.

The daylight murder of Rane was suspected to have had a connection with the extortion case after one of the extortion suspects was discovered to have been in the vicinity when the builder was shot at on JM Road.

Now, after the bail yesterday of the four extortion suspects, the unsolved murder case may just have become more difficult to investigate.

Senior Police Inspector Sampat Patil of the Shivajinagar police station had sought custody of Sandeep Sangle (30) of Bhavani Peth, Dhananjay Dixit (33) of Urali Kanchan, Sandeep alias Shankar Dicholkar (42) of Badlapur in Thane district and Ramdas Borkar (37) of Kathwadi in Velha taluka from the Yerawada Central Prison to investigate their alleged involvement in the murder case.

The four had been arrested earlier by the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Crime Branch for allegedly extorting Rs 10 lakh from Rane on October 23 to settle a land deal at Sus. As that investigation had progressed, it emerged that Borkar was on JM Road when Rane was shot at on the staircase of Anand Chambers.

Rane succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital a week later.

Patil said, "The chargesheet on their involvement in extortion was filed, but as the evidence was not enough we could not file a chargesheet on their involvement in the murder."
