The BJP on Wednesday alleged irregularities in voter registration across Rae Bareli, Wayanad, Diamond Harbour, and Kannauj parliamentary constituencies. The party demanded that Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Abhishek Banerjee, and Akhilesh Yadav resign as Lok Sabha MPs, claiming they won elections through "vote chori," reported PTI. At a presentation on electoral rolls at the BJP headquarters, former Union Minister Anurag Thakur highlighted alleged discrepancies in the Kolathur assembly seat in Tamil Nadu and Manipuri Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. He also called on the Chief Minister and DMK chief M.K. Stalin and SP leader Dimple Yadav resigned over alleged election rigging, reported PTI. Thakur criticized Congress, TMC, Samajwadi Party, and DMK leaders for questioning the Election Commission and accused them of spreading false narratives against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which is set to expand to other states. He claimed the opposition was trying to protect their "vote bank of illegal Bangladeshi infiltration" and other "intruders." "Seeing this 'shor' (hue and cry) being made by the opposition, it now seems that 'chor machaye shor'," he said, suggesting those in the wrong are now protesting loudly. "Rae Bareli, Wayanad, Kannuaj, to Diamond Harbour everywhere one question is coming up ,why did they make fake voters. Will they resign for indulging in 'vote chori' and protecting intruders?" Thakur asked, reported PTI. In his own allegations of "vote chori", Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi presented data from the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, claiming that over 1 lakh votes were "stolen" in the Mahadevapura assembly segment in Karnataka. He cited five types of manipulation, including duplicate voters, fake and invalid addresses, and single-address voters. As reported by PTI, on Tuesday, opposition leaders organized a protest march from Parliament House to the Election Commission’s headquarters but were stopped and briefly detained by police. The Congress intensified its campaign against alleged 'vote chori' on Wednesday by releasing a video showing how "fake votes" were allegedly cast. Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge urged citizens to raise their voices to protect constitutional institutions from the "clutches of the BJP." Gandhi also shared the minute-long video, saying, "Aapke vote ki chori aapke adhikar ki chori, aapki pehchaan ki chori hai." (Inputs from PTI)
13 August,2025 05:18 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentYSRCP chief and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is in "touch" with him through Telangana CM Revanth Reddy “on a hotline.” He claimed Rahul Gandhi avoids speaking about voting discrepancies in Andhra Pradesh because Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is himself in contact with the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Revanth Reddy stated, “Why doesn’t Rahul Gandhi talk about Arvind Kejriwal?… Kejriwal himself lost the MLA election. Rahul Gandhi doesn’t talk about Andhra because Chandrababu is in touch with Telangana CM Revanth Reddy through a hotline. So, what should I say about Rahul Gandhi, who himself is not sincere?” as cited by news agency ANI. The Telangana Chief Minister also said, “I questioned Rahul Gandhi while talking about ‘vote-chori’ in Delhi, although he did not mention the alleged 12.5 per cent vote difference between what was announced and what was counted in Andhra Pradesh.” CM Reddy further added, “Mr Rahul Gandhi, when in Delhi, talks about Vote Chori. Why doesn’t he speak about the 12.50 per cent vote difference between what was announced and what was counted in Andhra Pradesh? The difference was 2.5 per cent," as per news agency ANI. Earlier in the day, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi continued his attack on the Centre, saying the theft of one’s vote is also the theft of one’s rights and identity. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha shared a fictional video on the social media platform X showing two people, purportedly from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), colluding with Election Commission officials to cast votes in someone else’s name. As per news agency ANI, in the video, the two are seen leaving a polling booth after casting fake votes, with one of them saying, “This is such a good arrangement; victory is assured now.” When the real voter, 50-year-old ‘Garib Das’, arrives with his voter ID, he is told his vote has already been cast. His wife is told the same. The video ends with the two men seen colluding with the Booth Level Officer (BLO) and takes a swipe at the Election Commission, calling it the “Election Chori Aayog.” (With inputs from ANI)
13 August,2025 03:04 PM IST | Amaravati | mid-day online correspondentThe Supreme Court's decision on moving stray dogs to the shelter home in Delhi has sparked a huge debate across the country. Taking this very sensitive matter into consideration, the Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, on Wednesday said that he would examine the ongoing issue relating to community dogs. The Chief Justice of India took this matter into consideration after an advocate mentioned the matter, stating that different benches of the Supreme Court have issued conflicting directions. As reported by news agency ANI, the matter relating to stray dogs was mentioned before a bench headed by the CJI for urgent listing, to which the CJI said, "I will look into this." In reply, Advocate Nanita Sharma said that two benches of the apex court have already passed different orders on the stray dogs issue. Advocate Sharma further said, "This is with regard to the community dogs issue... There is an earlier judgement of this court, of a bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Sanjay Karol, which says there cannot be indiscriminate killing of canines and that compassion for all living beings has to be there," as cited by news agency ANI. Advocate Sharma was referring to the recent order passed by a bench headed by Justice JB Pardiwala, where the court had ordered relocation of the stray dogs in Delhi to dog shelters, and another order passed by a Justice JK Maheshwari-led bench in May 2024, whereby the petitions relating to the stray dog issue were relegated to the respective High Courts. Justice Maheshwari asserted that, "Under all circumstances, there cannot be any indiscriminate killings of canines, and the authorities have to take action in terms of the mandate and spirit of the prevalent legislation(s) in place." While pointing out the Delhi High Court’s order, Adv. Sharma today mentioned the petition filed by an organisation named Conference for Human Rights (India), challenging a Delhi High Court's order in its PIL seeking directions for sterilisation and vaccination of community dogs in Delhi as per the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules. Earlier in August 2023, the High Court disposed of the PIL without issuing any specific directions, after recording satisfaction with the steps taken by the authorities. However, soon after the High Court’s judgement, the NGO challenged it in July 2024, and a bench headed by Justice Gavai issued notice on the plea. On the contrary, a bench of Justices Pardiwala and R Mahadevan took a stern view of the stray dog menace and ordered the Delhi-NCR to start removing stray dogs from all localities within eight weeks and house them in dedicated dog shelters to be set up by civic authorities. It said that all localities should be made free of stray dogs and there should not be any compromise, while making it clear that no captured animal will be released back on the streets. It also directed the initiation of contempt proceedings against any individual or organisation that tries to impede the authorities from conducting the capture campaign. The Supreme Court's order was issued in response to a media report regarding the increasing prevalence of feral dog attacks that result in rabies. This action was taken pursuant to a suo motu proceeding that the court initiated. Terming the news report as "very disturbing and alarming", the bench had said that day the news report revealed that the elderly and children were the most affected by rabies from dog bite incidents. 13 August,2025 02:26 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentFormer Indian cricketer Suresh Raina appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday. The Indian cricket stalwart was summoned by the investigative agency in view of his relations to the betting application 1xbet. Suresh Raina, in a video, was seen entering the ED office during the early hours of Wednesday. As reported by the news agency, the federal probe agency will record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The investigation into money laundering is linked to an "illegal" betting app named 1xBet, the sources said. The 38-year-old former Indian cricketer is understood to have been linked to the app through certain endorsements. Although nothing has been stated by the Enforcement Directorate related to Suresh Raina in the media, sources suggest that the ED wants to understand his links with this app during the questioning. The central agency is probing multiple such cases involving illegal betting apps that are alleged to have duped numerous people and investors of crores of rupees or to have evaded a huge amount of taxes. #WATCH | Former Indian Cricketer Suresh Raina reaches ED office in Delhi to record his statement in 1xBet case following summons by the agency. pic.twitter.com/df9EYHIzJc — ANI (@ANI) August 13, 2025 Apart from Indian cricketer Suresh Raina, actor Rana Daggubati also appeared before the ED on Monday. Renowned actor Rana Dagguatti was also summoned regarding the alleged online betting games promotion case. Furthermore, the Enforcement Directorate had also issued a summons notice to the actor for July 23, but due to Daggubati's prior commitments and shooting schedule, the artist sought time to appear at the Hyderabad Zonal ED office. As reported by the news agency ANI, during January 2025, the Telangana police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against 25 celebrities and influencers, including popular figures like Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Vijay Deverakonda, and Manchu Lakshmi, for allegedly promoting illegal betting and gambling apps through their social media platforms. Reportedly, the FIR was launched by the Telangana police after a petition filed by 32-year-old businessman PM Phanindra Sarma. The complaint, lodged on March 19, 2025, highlighted a disturbing trend of celebrities and influencers promoting illegal gambling apps that violate the Public Gambling Act of 1867. The FIR about the same was launched at the Miyapur Police Station in Hyderabad under multiple sections of the TS Gaming Act and the IT Act, including Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, which deals with cheating and identity theft. 13 August,2025 12:10 PM IST | Delhi | mid-day online correspondentThe famous Pune Porsche case now observes a recent development as Pune Police moves an application in the sessions court, which challenges the Juvenile Justice Board. The application moved by Pune Police in the sessions court in Pune, seeks a challenge against the Juvenile Justice Board's (JJB) decision to reject their plea to try the 17-year-old accused in the fatal Porsche car crash as an adult, said Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray on Wednesday. With all efforts being made by the Pune Police to put the accused on trial as an adult, finally, the Pune police administration has moved an application in the court of law. Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray, representing the state in the case, said that “ The prosecution argued before the court that the JJB's decision was flawed. We filed the application in the sessions court on August 7. Once it is listed, a hearing date will be fixed," as cited by news agency ANI. To contest the Juvenile Justice Board’s order, the Pune Police administration successfully secured the necessary approval from the district magistrate. Soon after getting the approval, the police approached the sessions court to contest the JJB order. Earlier during the last month, the JJB turned down the police's application, ruling that the offence did not fall under the category of a "heinous crime". The incident occurred in the early hours of May 19, 2024, when a luxury Porsche car, driven by the accused juvenile, rammed into a motorcycle near Kalyani Nagar in Pune. The fatal crash resulted in the untimely deaths of two young individuals, identified as Ashwini Koshta and Aneesh Awadhia, both from Madhya Pradesh. The juvenile who was allegedly responsible for drunk driving and various other offences was taken into custody but later given bail by the Juvenile Justice Board. However, the condition of the bail granted by the Juvenile Justice Board created huge controversy; the Pune Police now seeks to examine the accused as an adult. It was also reported that the minor driver who was driving the Porsche car was allegedly served alcohol at a restaurant and bar despite being underage. The incident sparked widespread outrage and controversy over the alleged leniency shown to the accused and the influence of apolitical connections. Also, the parents of the juvenile driver allegedly bribed the doctors to swap his blood samples with those of his mother and similarly, at the government-run hospital in Pune, after the incident. 13 August,2025 10:55 AM IST | Samba | mid-day online correspondentRajiv Pratap Rudy maintained his 25-year-old dominance in the Constitution Club management, prevailing over the challenge from fellow BJP leader Sanjeev Balyan in one of its most keenly contested elections, which drew participation from marquee members, including Amit Shah from the BJP and Congress' Sonia Gandhi. Amid celebration by his supporters, Rudy told reporters well past midnight that he had won by over 100 votes, and members from his panel which drew from different parties had scored a win as well. "It's a beautiful victory for all the parliamentarians and all those who came to vote and endorse the relentless effort of the team for last two decades... It's a beautiful experience," Rudy told reporters. Prominent leaders of different parties, including Union ministers Shah and J P Nadda of the BJP and Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress, voted on Tuesday, as two seasoned ruling party members slugged it out for a key position. Incumbent Secretary (Administration) Rudy, a fifth-term Lok Sabha MP, faced a spirited challenge from Balyan, a two-term former Lok Sabha MP, but ended up winning with a comfortable margin. The contest was projected as a "BJP vs BJP" battle due to the similar party background of the two main contestants. Over 680 valid votes were cast out of the total electors of 1,295 current and former MPs, officials said, making it one of the highest turnouts for the election to the club's office-bearers. Several Union ministers, including Piyush Goyal and Kiren Rijiju, besides Shah and Nadda, and governors like Shiv Pratap Shukla of Himachal Pradesh, voted as contestants lobbied intensively to rally their supporters. Rudy has been a dominant presence, winning several elections uncontested, before Balyan, spurred by the support from some BJP leaders with Lok Sabha MP Nishikant Dubey being the most visible campaigner, decided to test the Bihar leader's strength. It is believed that members affiliated to opposition party largely backed Rudy, those of the BJP were split, with many favouring Balyan. The elections included 14 members vying for the position of 11 executive members. Both former Union ministers, Rudy and Balyan, may be from the same party but presented two contrasting personalities drawn from different social milieus. Rudy, a commercial pilot, is a suave and polished leader who is at home with social elites, mixing his urbane personality effortlessly with his background as a savvy parliamentarian who has got the better of the likes of Rabri Devi and her daughter Rohini Acharya in Lok Sabha elections from Saran. Balyan, who is from western Uttar Pradesh, was a representative of rural sensibilities and grassroots ruggedness. Warm and upfront, he had his share of close friends in the BJP and outside. That Rudy is a Thakur and his rival a Jat has given the contest an expected caste angle, but personal ties and behind-the-scenes manoeuvring played a big role in the final outcome. Rudy was on a familiar turf and his long ties with the members turned out to be decisive. While Rudy had listed the addition of numerous facilities to the club and its modernisation under his tenure to seek another term, Balyan was rooting for a change, claiming that the club should focus on catering to MPs and former MPs and not "outsiders" like IAS and IPS officers. The Lok Sabha Speaker is the ex-officio president of the club. But the Secretary plays a crucial role in the executive functioning of the facility. 13 August,2025 10:44 AM IST | New Delhi | PTICongress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused the Election Commission of not performing its duty of enforcing the ‘one man, one vote’ principle and said “abhi picture baki hai”, alluding to the claims of irregularities in the voters’ list. Gandhi asserted that his party was engaged in protecting the Constitution and would continue to do so. “There is not just one seat [where there is ‘vote chori’] but there are a number of seats. This is being done at a national level and systematically. The EC knows it and we know it too,” je told reporters in the Parliament House complex. “Earlier, evidence was not there but now there is evidence. We protect the Constitution. ‘One man, one vote’ is the foundation of the Constitution,” Gandhi said. It is the duty of the EC to enforce ‘one man, one vote’ and they have not done their duty, Gandhi said. Asked about Minta Devi, a 124-year-old voter allegedly listed in the Election Commission’s voter list from Bihar, Gandhi said, “There are unlimited cases like that. Abhi picture baki hai.” T-shirt protest Several MPs of the INDIA bloc parties held a protest in the Parliament House complex on Tuesday against the EC’s electoral roll revision in Bihar, with many of them wearing white T-shirts that had the name of the “124-year-old voter” allegedly found on the state’s voters’ list emblazoned on it. They held posters and raised slogans, demanding a rollback of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Several MPs, including Priyanka Gandhi, were seen wearing white T-shirts with ‘Minta Devi’ and her photo emblazoned on it and ‘124 Not Out’ written at the back. PM should resign: TMC MP Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet should resign and the Lok Sabha be dissolved if the Election Commission says there are discrepancies in the electoral rolls. BJD to move Odisha HC The Biju Janata Dal said that it would approach the Orissa High Court regarding “discrepancies” during the 2024 assembly and Lok Sabha polls, as the EC has “failed” to give any satisfactory reply. SC: Electoral rolls within remit of EC The Supreme Court on Tuesday said inclusion and exclusion of citizens or non-citizens from the electoral rolls was within the remit of the Election Commission (EC) and backed its stand to not accept Aadhaar and voter cards as conclusive proof of citizenship in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters’ list in Bihar. As the row over the ongoing SIR escalated inside and outside Parliament, the top court also observed that the dispute was “largely a trust deficit issue, since the EC has claimed that roughly 6.5 crore people of the total 7.9 crore voting population in poll-bound Bihar didn’t have to file any documents for them or their parents featured in the 2003 electoral rolls. After senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for one of the petitioners, accused the EC of “presumptive exclusion” of five crore people in the SIR, the court indicated that if anything suspicious was found in making them invalid it could give a direction to include all of them in the electoral rolls. 13 August,2025 09:01 AM IST | New Delhi | AgenciesLok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday constituted a three-member committee to probe charges against Justice Yashwant Varma after admitting a multi-party notice for his removal, setting in motion the process of impeachment of the Allahabad High Court judge. The inquiry committee comprises Supreme Court judge Justice Aravind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and senior Karnataka High Court advocate B V Acharya. “The committee will submit its report as early as possible. The proposal (for removal of Justice Varma) will remain pending till the receipt of the report of the inquiry committee,” Birla said. Birla said he had received a proposal from 146 Lok Sabha members, including Ravi Shankar Prasad and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, seeking removal of Justice Varma on July 21. Justice Varma was repatriated from the Delhi HC to the Allahabad HC after burnt wads of currency notes were found at his official residence here on March 14. After referring to relevant laws and judgements of the SC, the Delhi HC chief justice found the charges against Justice Varma were of serious nature and followed it up with the “in-house procedure”. The Lok Sabha Speaker said he has accepted the proposal and constituted a three-member committee for the removal of Justice Varma from his post in accordance with Section 3(2) of the Judges (Inquiry) Act 1968. 12 August,2025 11:26 PM IST | New Delhi | PTIThe Rajya Sabha on Tuesday returned the modified Income Tax Bill, along with the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, to the Lok Sabha as part of the parliamentary procedure. "The largely dense and complex structure of the Income Tax Act, 1961, resulted in various interpretations, and several avoidable disputes kept mounting, not so much because of the rate, but because of the language. We were subjected to too many litigations. The density and complexity of the Act, along with the verbose way it was written over the decades, with different styles dominating, made the Act very, very tedious for anyone to use," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in the upper house during the discussion. With the Rajya Sabha returning the Bill to the Lok Sabha with a voice vote, it has now been approved by Parliament and will be sent to the President for assent to become an Act, which will replace the over six-decade-old Income Tax Act, 1961. The Income Tax (No 2) Bill, 2025, was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday shortly after Finance Minister Sitharaman tabled the revised bill, incorporating most of the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Select Committee. The revised Bill will improve fairness and clarity while aligning the law with existing provisions. The new draft aims to provide lawmakers with a single, updated version that reflects all suggested changes, she said. Sitharaman said that suggestions were received from the select committee, which are required to be incorporated to convey the correct legislative meaning. "There are corrections in the nature of drafting, alignment of phrases, consequential changes and cross-referencing," she said, adding that the earlier Bill was pulled back to avoid confusion. The updated Income Tax Bill 2025 incorporates 285 suggestions from the Parliamentary Select Committee. The new legislation aims to simplify tax processes and address previous shortcomings, potentially reshaping the income tax landscape in the country. Last week, the Income Tax Bill, 2025, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on February 13 to replace the existing Income Tax Act, 1961, was formally withdrawn by the government. According to BJP MP Baijayant Panda, who chaired the Parliamentary Select Committee responsible for reviewing the legislation, the new law, once passed, will simplify India’s decades-old tax structure, cut down legal confusion, and help individual taxpayers and MSMEs avoid unnecessary litigation. "This new Act will further turbocharge growth by making taxes easy to understand and easy to comply with, thus reducing disputes and litigation." "The leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has seen the repeal and overhaul of well over 1500 laws, helping India become the fastest growing and now the 4th largest economy in the world," Panda remarked. The extant Income Tax Act of 1961 has undergone more than 4,000 amendments and contains over 5 lakh words. It has become too complex. The new bill simplifies that by nearly 50 per cent -- making it far easier for ordinary taxpayers to read and understand, according to Panda. The parliamentary panel had flagged multiple drafting errors and suggested amendments to reduce ambiguity. In the revised Bill, slabs and rates have been changed across the board to benefit all taxpayers. The new structure substantially reduces the taxes of the middle class and leaves more money in their hands, boosting household consumption, savings and investment, according to the government.
