Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock won the Oscars for Best Actor and Actress
Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock won the Oscars for Best Actor and Actress respectively at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday.
While Bridges won his first Academy Award for his portrayal of a washed-up country-western singer in Crazy Heart, Bullock won it for her role in The Blind Side.
Sandra Bullock plays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a suburban mom who takes in a homeless African-American teenager and encourages his talents as a football player.
Bridges, who has been nominated four times before, was the favourite to win the coveted trophy, having dominated the category this award season with wins at the Golden Globe and SAG awards among others. An emotional Bridges thanked his mom and dad. . The 60-year old beat off competition from Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney (Up In The Air), Morgan Freeman (Invictus), Jeremy Renner 'The Hurt Locker' and Colin Firth (A Single Man'. Last year's Best Actress winner Kate Winslet presented the Oscar trophy to Bridges.
Austrian actor Christoph Waltz and African American actress Mo'Nique took home Oscars for best supporting actor and actress, respectively. Waltz won the coveted trophy for his diabolical turn as Nazi officer Hans Landa in the Quentin Tarantino film Inglourious Basterds.
Mo'Nique won the Oscar for her harrowing role as an abusive mother in Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire, claiming her first ever Academy Award. Mo'Nique was widely seen as the front-runner for the award. She was previously known mostly for her stand-up comedy and for roles on television.
