The 22-year-old son of a city businessman took Rs 8.5 lakh on credit to spend on his girlfriends, drinking, shopping and bowling. And when he had to return the loan, he staged a drama of self-abduction to extort Rs 20 lakh from his hapless father to pay his debt.

But, it wasn't the first time that the young and desperate Pawan crossed the line.

Five years ago, he went missing from his house to execute a similar plan. But, the fear of being caught made him cancel the plan and return home.

But, this time his fears have come true. As the boy, who was trying to act smart with his parent, is behind the bars now.

Pawan's debt bills were flowing over Rs 8 lakh, prompting the creditor Ashok Kumar to threaten him to pay his debt before December 28.

The young businessman thought it was high time that he should revive his earlier plan and extort money from his father to pay off his debt.

To execute his plan he went missing from his Karol Bagh shop on December 26 and started sending SMSes to his father, fearing his voice would betray him.

"Initially Pawan's friend Himanshu, who was also involved in the kidnapping, called up his father and informed that his son had been abducted. After that, Pawan started texting his father demanding a sum of Rs. 20 lakh as ransom money," said a police official, wishing anonymity.

"When we visited Pawan's girlfriend Lubna's place to enquire about him, Lubna's father asked her to call Pawan.

The boy told Lubna that he would return in one or two days. He was giving contradictory statements about his position and we knew something fishy is going on," the official said.

The police arrested Pawan and his friend, when they had come to Dwarka to collect the ransom money.

Pawan owns an optical shop in Ghaffar market, which was given by his father. He was a spendthrift, who used to drive around in an expensive Skoda car. He used to spend freely on girls and other indulgence.

The police said that after getting the ransom money of Rs. 20 lakh he had planned to celebrate the New Year in Macau with his girlfriend.
