One of the teams working on reuniting the woman with her family managed to contact the officials from the company where her son was employed.

Samaritans, Chennai cops use Google, OSINT to reunite missing woman with her son

A sixty-year-old woman, who went missing from her home for almost a week, was reunited with her son by a team of good Samaritans, who used Google Maps, trackers and other internet open sources to trace her family. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the woman was in shock after losing her husband a year ago. On Wednesday, September 18, she was spotted in an unconscious state, lying on the side of a road in Chennai. However, timely intervention by a team of private detectives, not only saved her life, but they also managed to reunite her with her son in a short duration of three hours, with the help of local police and internet tools. Sequence 1: Detective firm staffers find woman in an unconscious state On 6.30pm, Wednesday, September 18, a woman aged around 60 was found lying unconscious on the side of a footpath near a private detective firm. Her clothes were shabby and she looked like a destitute person. Given the proximity, the staff at the detective firm immediately rushed to her and tried bringing her back to a conscious state by splashing water on her face. They also gave her lemon juice and managed bringing her in a semi-conscious state.  Sequence 2: Cops suspect woman had mental health issues The incident was immediately reported to Ramapuram Police, following which a team of cops reached the spot. After preliminary inquiries, the police suspected that she was going through some mental health issues. The police planned to send the woman to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Chennai’s Kilpauk area. The institute is one of the oldest and largest mental hospitals in Asia.  Sequence 3: ‘Operation Reunite’ begins   Around 6.30 pm, the Samaritans launch an operation to reunite the woman with her family. “We approached the woman and tried to gather information about her identity and hometown. The woman mentioned a name related to her husband. Based on this, our instincts led us to trace her family using Open Source Intelligence (OSINT). With cooperation from the police, we moved forward quickly,” said Esakki A, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the detective firm.  Sequence 4: Woman identifies son The detective firm staffers and the cops first gathered key details about the woman’s name and location. “Using the voter list, we identified potential family members, including one of her sons. We then searched for the son on LinkedIn and, fortunately, found a matching profile. When we showed the woman his profile photo, she confirmed that it was her son. Further investigation revealed that he worked at Ramapuram near an info-tech park,” said Esakki.  Sequence 5: Technology comes to rescue The team then splits into two groups: one with the police officers who went to the IT Park to locate the woman’s son and another who worked to contact people from her hometown. Using Google search and Maps, we pinpointed the location and contact details of people in her area. Through Google Street View, we found phone numbers of the residents living in the same neighbourhood and made several calls until we connected with the relevant person. In the meanwhile, the first team reached the IT Park and managed to contact the officials from the company where the woman’s son was employed and obtained his phone number. When he was informed about his mother, the woman’s son immediately rushed to the location where she was kept. Sequence 6: Mother and son reunited Simultaneously, the team also informed the woman’s relatives in her hometown. “They stayed in touch with us throughout the operation to ensure her safety. By 9.30 pm, just three hours after the search began, the woman’s son arrived and was reunited with his mother,” the CEO said. “The police were highly impressed by the efficiency and coordination of our team and appreciated our swift resolution. The use of available resources — including OSINT — and the strong collaboration with the police enabled us to reunite the family quickly. It was one of our proudest moments, as we demonstrated the power of teamwork and smart investigative techniques," said Essaki, who was overwhelmed by the success of ‘Operation Reunite’.

SC dismisses SpiceJet's plea against Delhi HC order grounding 3 aircraft engines

The Supreme Court on Friday approved an order of the Delhi High Court which directed the low-cost airline SpiceJet to ground three aircraft engines due to non-payments to lessors, PTI reported. According to PTI, A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra dismissed the appeal filed by SpiceJet against the Delhi High Court verdict of September 11. "We will not interfere. It's a correct order," the bench said. After the SC order, SpiceJet spokesperson said the company is currently in discussions to reach an amicable settlement with the aircraft lessor. "It is important to note that two of the three engines in question are already grounded, and our operations remain completely normal and unaffected. We remain committed to ensuring seamless operations," the SpiceJet spokesperson said to PTI. A division bench of the High Court affirmed a single-judge court's judgment directing the low-cost airline to halt the three engines owing to payment delinquency, ruling that the carrier had breached an agreed-upon temporary arrangement for payment of dues. The single-judge bench of the Delhi High court on August 14 directed SpiceJet to ground three engines by August 16 and hand them over to their lessors - Team France 01 SAS and Sunbird France 02 SAS. The division bench of the high court had refused to interfere with an August 14 order of the single-judge bench to ground the three aircraft engines and hand them over to the lessors, and disposed of SpiceJet's appeals against it, PTI reported. SpiceJet challenged the August 14 order of the single-judge bench. "The appeals are emblematic of the adage that fools create assets and wise men use them. The use of a lessor's assets without recompense, on agreed terms, by the lessee often leads to consequences which disrupt the interests of both sides," the high court had said. According to the high court, SpiceJet was in default and there were still unpaid past and present outstanding debts. This was evident from the records. "The fact that the financial condition of SpiceJet is weak is evident from its conduct and the stand taken on its behalf in court, which is that it is attempting to infuse funds through loans and/or equity." It added the lessors might lose both their assets, the engines and the money, if they are stopped from using their contractual rights at this point. "The position in which SpiceJet is at this juncture, Team France and Sunbird France could well end up both without its engines or the monies due under the engine-lease agreements. Therefore, compensation in terms of money does not seem probable from the point of view of Team France and Sunbird France," it had said. The single judge had passed the order on pleas moved by the lessors asking SpiceJet to transfer ownership of the three engines upon the expiration of the lease agreements According to PTI, It was stated in the pleas that following the termination, the plaintiffs had directed the airline to ground and re-deliver the engines and pay all outstanding dues, but the carrier had failed to do so. "It is, however, clarified that the defendant will remain liable for making payments, which it undertook in an order dated May 29, 2024, towards the admitted outstanding of USD 4.8 million and towards the weekly payments arising on account of the use of the engines under the aegis of this court." "The return of the engines does not absolve the defendant from its liability for the payments, which have admittedly fallen due, and to that extent, the plaintiff is entitled to recover the said amount from the defendant through execution of the order dated May 29, 2024," the court had said. It had said that SpiceJet is a "defaulter and has no legal and contractual right to continue the use of the engines". In its response to the applications, the airline's counsel had submitted that after filing the suit, the defendant made a payment of USD 7.18 million between December 14, 2023 and May 24, 2024. The airline's attorney had stated in its response to the petitions that after filing the lawsuit, the defendant paid USD 7.18 million between December 14, 2023, and May 24, 2024. The airline paid USD 1.48 million after the settlement conditions were recorded in court, according to the attorney, and as of August 12, there was an acknowledged default to the tune of USD 2.67 million toward the remaining balance. He had stated that although the defendant acknowledges that there has been a default, it is attempting to make these defaults more regular and had requested an extension of time until September 30 to settle the outstanding balance. Priyanka Gandhi criticises PM Narendra Modi for disrespecting Mallikarjun Kharge

The Congress general secretary said that today's politics is full of poison and the prime minister should have set a different example, keeping the dignity of his post in mind. On Tuesday, Kharge wrote a letter to the prime minister and raised the issue of "extremely objectionable" and violent statements by the ruling alliance members targeting Rahul Gandhi, urging him to discipline his leaders. BJP chief J P Nadda wrote to the Congress president and cited his party's own litany of complaints against the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and other Congress members for their choice of words against the prime minister, in response to Kharge's letter to PM Modi, reported PTI. In view of the unrestrained and violent statements of some BJP leaders and ministers, Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Kharge wrote a letter to the PM, concerned about the safety of the life of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X. — Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (@priyankagandhi) September 20, 2024 Priyanka said, "If the Prime Minister had faith in democratic values, balanced dialogue and respect for elders, he would have himself replied to this letter. Instead, he got a low-level and aggressive reply written by Nadda ji and sent it, the tradition and culture of democracy is to ask questions and have a dialogue. Even in religion, no one is above values such as dignity and etiquette, today's politics is full of poison, so the Prime Minister should have set a different example, keeping the dignity of his post in mind, If the PM had respectfully replied to the letter of a senior politician, his image and dignity would have increased in the eyes of the public, It is unfortunate that our leaders in the highest positions in the government have rejected these great traditions." She asked, “What was the need to disrespect an 82-year-old senior public leader.” On Thursday, the Congress said, Prime Minister Modi must rise above "petty politics" and blamed the actions of the ruling alliance leaders, who targeted Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The opposition party had asserted the whole world is watching how the ruling BJP is "putting the life of the Leader of the Opposition in danger". The opposition party asserted that the entire world is watching how the ruling BJP is "endangering the life of the Leader of the Opposition." This claim was made in a letter by AICC General Secretary Jairam Ramesh to BJP chief JP Nadda, in response to Nadda's earlier letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. The opposition criticised Nadda's response as "intemperate" and "juvenile" after Kharge had written to Prime Minister Modi, raising concerns about "threats" directed at Rahul Gandhi, reported PTI. Congress most corrupt, run by 'tukde tukde' gang, urban Naxals: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday lashed out at the Congress, saying the "most corrupt" party was being run by the tukde tukde gang and urban Naxals, reported news agency PTI. "The Congress which you see today is not the party with which a great man like Mahatma Gandhi was associated," PM Modi said, addressing a public meeting at Wardha in Maharashtra on completion of one year of the PM Vishwakarma scheme, reported PTI. "The ghost of hatred has entered the Congress," PM Modi said. "In today's Congress the soul of patriotism has breathed its last," he added, reported PTI. During Maharashtra visit, PM Modi also spoke of the "anti-India agendas" of the Congress leaders in their speeches abroad, without naming that party's leader Rahul Gandhi, who is facing flak from the ruling dispensation for his remark in the US on scrapping the reservation system. "If there is a corrupt party it is the Congress and the most corrupt family is its shahi parivar," PM Modi said, without naming the Gandhi family, reported PTI. "Congress hates Ganpati puja as well," PM Modi said. "I went to a Ganesh puja programme and Congress criticised it for appeasement politics. Ganpati Bappa was put behind bars in Karnataka. Ganpati idol was put in a police van," he said, reported PTI. "Congress allies in Maharashtra kept mum and did not take a stand on Ganpati Bappa's insult," PM Modi said during Maharashtra visit. In an apparent reference to the ensuing state assembly elections in Maharashtra later this year, PM Modi said, "In Maharashtra, we have to be aware of their duplicity." "Falsehood and betrayal are the hallmark of the Congress and people of Maharashtra should beware of the party," he said, reported PTI. The Congress used farmers only for politics and corruption, PM Modi said. "We should not give another chance to Congress, which destroyed farmers. Falsehood and betrayal is the hallmark of Congress," PM Modi said. The Congress did not fulfil its election promises in Telangana, he added, reported PTI. PM Modi said the SC, ST and OBC categories are the biggest beneficiaries of the PM Vishwakarma scheme, and accused the previous Congress governments of neglecting the Vishwakarma community. "Congress did not allow SCs, STs and OBCs to prosper. We have put an end to the mindset of the Congress which didn't allow these communities to prosper. Our vision is to ensure that the beneficiaries don't remain just artisans but also become entrepreneurs," he said, reported PTI. He said his government wants to take the textile industry to the global market and restore the glory of the textile sector. PM Modi said the British rulers had conspired to finish off India's traditional skills. Mahatma Gandhi gave a boost to rural traditional skills but governments after Independence did not give justice to the Vishwakarma community, leading to deterioration in the sector, PM Modi said during Maharashtra visit. "Through Vishwakarma scheme, we have pledged prosperity through labour and a better tomorrow through skill," PM Modi said during Maharashtra visit, reported PTI. In the last one year, more than 20 lakh people from 18 professions were linked to the Vishwakarma scheme, and more than 8 lakh craftsmen and artisans got skill training, he said. Vishwakarma Yojana not just a government programme but a roadmap to utilize thousands of years old skills to develop India, he said. PM Modi also visited the exhibition at the National PM Vishwakarma programme and met some of the scheme's beneficiaries. He also launched the "Acharya Chanakya Skill Development Centre" scheme of Maharashtra Government, and the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Women Startup Scheme of Maharashtra Govt for support to women-led startups, reported PTI. He laid the foundation stone of a 1,000-acre PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel (PM MITRA) Park at Amravati in Maharashtra. He also released a commemorative postage stamp to mark one year of the Vishwakarma scheme. (With inputs from PTI)

Mid-Day Premium What’s missing in women’s safety plans in India?

Women's safety in India has been a major concern for decades. Despite various initiatives, and promises the country continues to see worrisome levels of gender-based violence. From the infamous 2012 Nirbhaya case to more recent cases like the Abhaya rape-murder case RG Kar rape-murder case and Badlapur school sexual assault, the issue has persisted. With repeated incidents of gendered violence, especially sexual violence, coming to the fore, it--yet again--raised concerns about the effectiveness of the government's action plans to protect women. As a reaction to the outrage and demands for justice over the Kolkata medic's case, the West Bengal assembly had unanimously passed the Aparajita Bill which called for harsher punishments for those who have committed sexual offences against women and children. Earlier we explored how effective this bill would be and in this report, mid-day spoke to experts who stated that the nation's approach to women's safety still has significant inadequacies. They suggested that there is still a large gap between policies on paper and their real-world execution.   The current state of women’s safety in India Women’s safety initiatives have gained more attention in recent years, with governments introducing schemes like the Nirbhaya Fund, setting up fast-track courts for sexual violence cases, and launching emergency helplines. While the government, through the Indian Penal Code and several Acts like POCSO, Criminal Law (Amendment) of 2013 and other legislations with the most recent being Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, have introduced stringent laws against sexual violence. Speaking to mid-day.com, Mumbai-based activist Hasina Khan, said that while laws in India exist that deal with crimes against women, especially sexual violence, however, these bills have loopholes she said. "The laws were passed in a hurry with minimum interaction with the experts and thence they have loopholes. Particularly speaking about sexual violence, we should check the method of implementation of the bills," said the founder of the Bebaak Collective. Meanwhile, Akhil Neema, the co-founder of the Centre for Gender and Politics focusing on women's safety, said, "There are gaps in addressing safety in public spaces and for women in non-traditional work environments." He added, "While existing policies like the POSH Act have laid a foundation for addressing women's safety in workplaces, implementation remains a significant challenge. We've observed instances where companies seek POSH training certificates without conducting actual training, undermining the policy's effectiveness." What do records say? The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data showed a steady rise in the total number of crimes against women in India over the last decade. In 2013, there were 2,23,652 cases reported, and by 2022, this figure had increased to 4,45,256. When focusing specifically on rape cases, the numbers have also seen a consistent increase. In 2013, 22,871 cases of rape were reported, and this number rose to 35,600 in 2022. The year 2021 saw the highest number of reported rapes, with 35,603 cases. Although there was a slight dip in 2020, the overall pattern remains one of concern. Speaking on Mumbai, the city saw 5,543 instances of rape get documented, with a steady increase reaching 7,456 by 2022. Although there was a modest decrease in 2020 to 7,023 cases, the overall trend has been one of constant growth. Similarly, in Maharashtra as a whole, the number of rape grew from 39,526 in 2013 to 58,796 by 2022. The numbers have risen considerably year after year, with 2020 indicating a slight decrease before continuing to rise in 2021 and 2022. Gaps in government policies Responding to a query on what her thoughts are on the implementation of laws concerning crimes against women, Hasina Khan said that the methodology of its implementation needs to be looked at. "For instance, the budget allocation and infrastructure recommended under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, has been in shambles for quite some now. Similarly, in regard to sexual harassment, a complaint can be filed within three months of the incident. Meanwhile, the implementation of the Internal Complaints Committee has not been uniform," she said. There's a need to examine how is the government utilising existing laws and infrastructure. "We lack budget, are inadequate to efficiently implement the existing laws. We don't need new bills that constantly talk about capital punishment for sexual assault," said Khan. It is crucial to examine how is the government dealing with gender-based violence and what is the state doing to deal with it, Khan added. Meanwhile, Adv Nausheen Yousuf, responding to the writer's queries said, "I believe a lot of times women need a support system at every stage, they need to know their case, interact with the prosecution so as to know the stage of it, psychological support etc. Though we have the law keeping up to it and even addresses victim compensation a lot more could be done here. The societal stigma is something at the ground level which we all are grappling with, the idea of "ideal victims" daunts every process." She further explained, "A lot needs to be done with sexual harassment at the workplace and domestic violence laws. Usually, people tend to undermine domestic violence, it's invisible, part of life, sadly "acceptable" and not taken as seriously as sexual violence. That's my major worry. Articles are written about sexual violence whereas domestic violence victims are forgotten. Though it's a more severe and intense and deep issue." When asked whether the laws--which deal with crimes against women--are inclusive or not, Khan said that she does not think present laws and policies are inclusive. "Politicians use women's issues as political tools for their advancement," said Khan and added that the women want quick redressal of their complaints, adequate infrastructure and others. "When the government provides us with all, that's when we'll be their ladki bahins," she quipped. Suggestions for improvement To fill the gaps in women’s safety plans, activists and experts have proposed several actionable steps that the government can consider. These suggestions focus on enhancing existing policies, improving enforcement, and fostering a cultural shift. "We believe our legislators can set an example by establishing clear legal protections for women in political spaces. This can be achieved by strengthening existing laws, such as explicitly including political parties under the POSH Act or creating specific legislation for this sector," Akhil Neema told mid-day. He further stated, "Additionally, it should be mandatory for all political parties to establish Internal Complaints Committees to address issues of harassment and discrimination. Improving data collection on gender-based violence and discrimination in political spaces is also essential to better understand the problem and implement effective solutions." Meanwhile, Naushen Yousuf stated that firstly it is crucial to provide awareness and "train officers to ensure they treat marginalised communities with fairness, rather than neglect". She further stated that building confidence within these communities to approach legal forums is essential. Speaking about the reforms the government can implement, she said and added, "Starting with our legislators, we must deny election seats to those facing accusations with pending cases. There should also be a support system at every level of the legal process." "Unfortunately, marginalised men often receive harsher punishments, such as the death penalty, while those from affluent backgrounds escape justice due to faulty investigations or misuse of evidence. Even when marginalised individuals are accused, the wealthy often have access to a fleet of lawyers, highlighting the disparity in legal support. The Nithari case is a clear example of this injustice, while cases like Asaram's reflect the slow legal processes. We need to critically examine and address these issues to ensure true justice for all," said Nausheen.

Congress demands SPG security for Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi amid controversy

Following controversial remarks made by Union Minister Ravneet Bittu about Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party has rallied to defend its leader. AICC National spokesperson and Congress legislator, Kuldeep Rathore, criticised Bittu and the BJP, expressing concern for the security of both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, and has called for the restoration of their SPG security. During a press conference in Shimla, Rathore stated that Bittu should consider his family's history with the Congress before making such statements. He spoke about Bittu's previous opposition to the BJP during the farmers' movement and questioned whether the party appointed him as a minister to make such comments. Rathore condemned the BJP's attempts to create a hostile atmosphere against Rahul Gandhi, suggesting that it poses a threat to his safety. He urged both Bittu to apologise for their remarks, emphasising the need for heightened security for Rahul Gandhi in light of the current situation.
