In a tragic incident, three students died and left others injured in a horrific accident on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on Tuesday morning. The collegians were headed to Lonavla and were travelling in two cars, an Innova and Polo.  The Innova was ferrying eight of the 13 friends, while the Polo had five as per a report by Times of India.

The Polo rammed into a stationary tempo and was being driven by an 18-year-old boy. The other two who died in the crash were 17 and 19-years-old. The accident took place on the Pune-bound side of the expressway, just before the Khalapur toll plaza. While three of the people in the Polo died, two sustained injuries and are currently recuperating at MGM Hospital in Kamote.

The young man driving the Polo died in the accident is said to have been driving his father’s car and was preparing for NEET. The other was perusing her fashion designing degree after giving her HSC exams.

As per the police, the driver of the Polo lost control of the car while overtaking a car and crashed into the tempo ahead of him. As per a parent of one of the kids in the Innova, the students were on their way to celebrate the birthday of one of their friends.

The police said that the driver of the Polo was cutting lanes dangerously and even overtook vehicles and changed lanes before losing control of the car.

The man driving the car that the Polo overtook said that the driver attempted to overtake his car from the left, but failed. He then overtook them from the left and subsequently another car before crashing into a tempo that was on the extreme left. He along with the occupants of the Innova rushed the injured to the hospital.

As per a relative of the deceased driver, the airbag on the side of the driver tore and led to his death. The person sitting next to him survived as his airbag deployed. He added, that the group was supposed to return the same night.

The deceased driver was described as a brilliant student who used to take care of his grandfather’s business in Baiganwadi.

The young man left home at 7am and had picked up the others from Thane before heading towards Lonavla.  The police have filed an accident case against the driver of the Polo.
