Armed robbers loot jewellery outlet

Four robbers looted ornaments worth Rs 60 lakh at gunpoint from a Ghatkopar jewellery shop on Thursday, just minutes after it had opened in the morning.

Armed robbers barged into a jewellery outlet in Ghatkopar (W) minutes after the shop was opened on Thursday morning and escaped with gold ornaments valued at approximately Rs 60 lakh.


Preliminary inquires have revealed that one of the accused, posed as a customer and entered M/s R G Jewelers located on M G Road, Ghatkopar (W) under the pretext of buying a gold ring.

Kanak Jain, the shop owner had just opened the shop and was arranging the gold ornaments in display. No other customer or employee was present at the shop.u00a0

Unaware about the modus operandi, Jain started showing gold rings to the customer, when suddenly three more intruders barged into the shop armed with revolvers.

According to eyewitness Bharat Jain, proprietor of a jewellery outlet in the same vicinity, “The dacoits threatened the shop owner dire consequences and asked them to empty all the gold ornaments in their carry bag. The men vanished soon after.”

Interestingly, the close circuit camera (CCTV) installed in the shop was non functional and is of no use for investigators.

Surprisingly, the entire stretch of M G Road has many jewellery outlets and in the past most of the outlets had been looted either at knifepoint or gunpoint.u00a0

And after jewelers plea the Ghatkopar police had put a police chowkie few meters from the location. However it is not clear, if any policeman was present on duty at the police chowkie or if the chowkie was even open at the time of the robbery.

The Ghatkopar police visited the scene of incident along with local crime branch unit 7, which has its office few meters away from the spot.

A senior police officer from Ghatkopar police station said, “We u00a0have sent the police team to the spot and are busy recording the statement of the owner. The matter is being probed.”

Meanwhile Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Prakash George added, “We have sent our crime branch team to the location and we will be conducting a parallel probe in the case.”

The Ghatkopar police have registered offence under various sections of Indian Penal Code read with the Indian Arms Act against unknown people.

Meanwhile the Ghatkopar jewellers association and Bullion Traders Association have condemned the incident and have requested the police to nail the culprits soon.
