J-K Police intensify crackdown on drug peddling; 94 cases registered

Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) Police have intensified their crackdown on drug peddling in the region, registering 94 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act this year, officials said on Tuesday. As part of their efforts, chargesheets have been filed in 64 cases, and 156 individuals have been arrested and produced in court. "Along with terrorism, there is a drug menace as well. J-K Police are relentlessly working against drug peddling and those involved. This year, we have registered 94 cases under the NDPS Act. Chargesheets have been filed in 64 cases, and 156 people have been produced in court. We have also seized properties worth Rs 4.5 crore," Srinagar SSP Imtiyaz Hussain said. On December 22, the Budgam Police attached properties worth Rs1.28 crore in four cases under the NDPS Act. The properties include a residential house and vehicles, such as a Mahindra Scorpio, Mini Truck, and Ashoka Leyland, owned by Muhammad Yaseen Dar of Sholipora Budgam. Dar is implicated in FIR Nos. 302/2020 and 134/2021. Additionally, in Chadoora, police attached land and a residential house worth Rs 63.7 lakh owned by Muhammad Ayoub Beigh, involved in case FIR No. 47/2024, officials said. On December 10, Awantipora Police seized property worth Rs3.30 lakh from drug peddler Jitender Singh. The property, a four-wheeler, was confiscated under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act for being acquired through illicit drug trafficking, they said. In October, Anantnag Police disrupted an interstate drug trafficking racket. Three individuals were arrested, and 413 bottles of Codeine Phosphate were recovered. Two injured in firing incident at Delhi's Aman Vihar

Two persons were injured in a firing incident in the Aman Vihar area of the city on Tuesday night, police said. According to officials, the shooting occurred after a scuffle. The injured were identified as Bharat and Tushar. Both were rushed to the hospital, where Bharat has since been discharged, and Tushar is undergoing treatment, they said. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and also under the Arms Act. Delhi Police are making efforts to arrest the accused. Earlier, a 21-year-old youth died and another man was critically injured in Delhi's Jahangirpuri area on Monday after being stabbed by three juveniles, who were later apprehended. Congress holds nationwide ‘Ambedkar Samman March’

The Congress party on Tuesday held a nationwide protest—‘Ambedkar Samman March’—including in Jammu, Amritsar, Haryana, Bhopal, Jharkhand, Guwahati and Chennai, to protest against Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Constitution, and reiterated its demand for an apology. A weeklong campaign against Shah was launched with the party alleging that Shah insulted Ambedkar with his remarks while participating in a debate on the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha last week. Scores of workers, former ministers, ex-legislators and senior leaders joined the march demanding Shah’s resignation.  Slogans against the BJP and Shah, and hailing Ambedkar, reverberated in the rally. The Congress leaders also submitted a memorandum demanding respect and dignity for Ambedkar.  “The agitation has now reached the ‘sadak’ from Sansad. We will continue to hold marches to ensure justice for the architect of the Constitution. We will not tolerate any insult to Ambedkar,” said Congress’ Jammu and Kashmir working president Raman Bhalla.  In Haryana, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda led the protest with other party leaders and workers in Rohtak, while Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari, along with former MP chief minister Digvijaya Singh, with other party leaders and workers led the protest in Bhopal.  Kalaburagi observes bandh Protesters in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi took to streets on Tuesday following a bandh call given by Dalit organisations to condemn the recent statement of Shah on Ambedkar in the Parliament. Adequate security arrangements have been put in place by the police to avoid any untoward incidents.  According to police, the city is completely shut with no traffic movement as buses, auto rickshaws and taxis are not operating and shops are also shut following the bandh call given by various Dalit organisations. “A bandh is being observed in Kalaburagi after a call for the same was given by various Dalit organisations condemning the statement of union home minister on Ambedkar. We have deployed police forces in large numbers. Adequate security measures are in place to avoid any untoward incident,” a senior police officer said. “Situation remains peaceful and everything is under control,” he said. BSP demands resignation Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers on Tuesday held protests in parts of the state over Shah’s remarks on Ambedkar and demanded his resignation. BSP chief Mayawati had earlier described Shah’s remarks made in Rajya Sabha last week as deeply hurtful to Ambedkar’s followers. On Tuesday, BSP workers staged protests in parts of the state, including the state capital Lucknow, where people gathered in front of Ambedkar’s statue in Hazratganj area. Party workers, carried copies of the Preamble and posters of Ambedkar in their hands and raised slogans. Congress, BJP, AAP councillors clash  The  councillors of Congress, BJP and AAP clashed on Tuesday over the Ambedkar issue during the general house meeting of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation here. The Congress and AAP councillors had passed a motion against Shah over his remarks and demanded his resignation, while BJP councillors accused the Congress of trying to belittle Babasaheb Ambedkar during Nehru's time. Delhi cops bust immigration racket, arrest 11

The Delhi police on Tuesday claimed to have unearthed a gang involved in illegal immigration of Bangladeshi nationals arresting at least 11 people in connection. Among those arrested, four are Bangladeshi citizens and the rest were allegedly involved in making forged documents, an official said. “The gang was busted when our team tracked down four people involved in a murder case in Sangam Vihar on October 21,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan. The accused persons were found in possession of Bangladeshi ID cards (chip-based NID cards) and birth certificates. Around 21 Aadhar cards, four voter ID cards, and eight PAN cards were also recovered from the victim’s residence, said police.  A team led by Inspectors Umesh Yadav and Umesh Sharma, under the supervision of ACPs Abhinendera Jain and Niraj Tokas, was formed to conduct a thorough probe into the illegal immigration issue, Chauhan said. Jaipur inferno death toll reaches 15

The death toll in the gas tanker crash on the Ajmer highway climbed to 15 on Tuesday, with two more persons succumbing to their injuries, hospital authorities said. “Two patients undergoing treatment died in the morning. Three were discharged yesterday. At present, 18 patients are under treatment and five of them are critical,” Dr Sushil Bhati, Superintendent of the SMS Hospital, said. He said one or two persons would be discharged later in the day as their condition has improved. An LPG tanker collided with a truck on December 20, sparking a massive fireball that turned a stretch of the Jaipur-Ajmer highway into an inferno. Eleven persons had died on the day of the incident.  Police question tanker driver The driver of an LPG tanker that was involved in the December 20 explosion on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway, appeared before police and later will be also questioned by the Special Investigation Team probing the case, a senior official said on Tuesday. The driver, identified as Jaiveer, 40, a resident of Mathura in UP, managed to get out of the tanker in time after sensing the impact of the collision, which broke the tanker's outlet nozzles. Congress moves SC over changes in election rules

The Congress on Tuesday filed a writ petition in the SC challenging the recent amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 and expressed hope that the apex court will help restore the “fast eroding” integrity of the electoral process. The government has tweaked an election rule to prevent public inspection of certain electronic documents such as CCTV camera and webcasting footage as well as video recordings of candidates. AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who filed the petition, said, “The integrity of the electoral process is fast eroding. Hopefully the Supreme Court will help restore it.” “A writ has just been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the recent amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961,” he said in a post on X. Ramesh said the Election Commission, a Constitutional body charged with the conduct of free and fair elections cannot be allowed to unilaterally, and without public consultation, amend such a vital law in such a brazen manner. Rain lashes parts of Delhi, max temp higher than usual

Parts of Delhi witnessed rain on Tuesday evening even as the day temperature remained slightly higher than normal for this time of the season. The city's air quality showed marginal improvement with the AQI at 7 pm recorded at 358, down from 398 in the morning. It remained under the "very poor" category, nevertheless. Several areas in central, south, and east Delhi, witnessed rainfall towards the evening. The maximum temperature was recorded at 20.8 degrees Celsius, which was warmer than usual for the time of the season. Cloudy skies prevailed during the day. Out of the 37 monitoring stations that recorded data, two -- Mundka, Nehru Nagar ¿ recorded air quality in the "severe" category, 32 in the "very poor" category and the remaining in the "poor" category. Dadar-Porbandar Saurashtra Express derails in Gujarat

The Dadar-Porbandar Saurashtra Express Train on Tuesday derailed at Kim station in Gujarat, the officials said. They said that the relief operations were underway. In an official statement, the Western Railway said, "Train No. 19015 Dadar - Porbandar Saurashtra Express derailed at 15:32 hrs while departing from Kim Station. Four wheels of a non passenger coach (VPU) attached next to engine got derailed. Restoration work is on and senior officers are at site monitoring the work." "There is no injury or harm to any onboard passengers or railway staff. The normal movement of trains is not affected," Western Railway said. Further details will be updated.
