HangOut needs to take the pink down a notch, and take the food up a rung

When you set up shop in a lane already crammed with popular hunger-fixes like KFC burgers and Theobroma pastries, you better deliver. Unfortunately, HangOut, a just-opened dessert eatery doesn't. Pity, because leveraging a hot location (bang next to hungry shoppers fresh from street bargains on Linking Road) with great fare could have translated into big bucks.

You can spot the place from a mile away because of its overwhelming pink du00e9cor. Very Hannah Montanaesque and certainly attention grabbing, if that was their intention.

We started with a Paneer Chilly Croissant (Rs 40) which was nothing to write home about, and a Chicken Barbeque Sandwich (Rs 50) that was spicy and tasty but could have done with more chicken, less onion.u00a0

For dessert, we picked a Ferrero Rocher pastry (Rs 70) and Chocolate Mousse (Rs 70). Both were disappointing, with the mousse tasting way too sweet and the slightly raw pastry leaving us hunting for minuscule bits of the promised Ferrero Rocher.

The menu is extensive, and the counters are filled to the brim with imaginative stuff like Jeera and Ajwain Cookies and mango-flavoured chocolates. We played it safe with a box of Chocolate Chip Cookies
(Rs 80), and came away smiling. The adequately crunchy cookies sprinkled with the just the right amount of chocolate shavings helped redeem its reputation.

That said, what also sets this place apart are the "chocolate bouquets" they offer, ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 1,500.u00a0 An assortment of chocolates of your choice can be packaged into a bouquet of sorts. A nice idea, but once again, we wish they'd gone a little easy on the pink sprigs and baskets.u00a0

They take home delivery orders and have branches in Kandivli, Malad, Vile Parle, Thane and Andheri.

HangOut didn't know we were there. THE GUIDE reviews anonymously and pays for meals and drinks.
