The 92nd convocation of the Banaras Hindu Universityu00a0(BHU) was held on March 7 at the Amphitheatre Ground of the varsity. Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Kapil Sibal, was the chief guest and he delivered the convocation address.
The vice-chancellor Prof D P Singh welcomed the minister and chancellor Dr Karan Singh,u00a0 officers, teachers, students and distinguished guests. Four hundred and seven medals and prizes were awarded during the event. Girl students bagged 15 out of 27 medals that were presented to meritorious students, easily outshining boys on the occasion.
A total of 6,743 degrees were also given out- 4,334 of graduation, 2,128 of post graduation and 281 of PhD level.
The chief guest while addressing the convocation emphasised on knowledge based economy and said that India needs to shift from earlier paradigm of education system that was passive, linear, hierarchical and non-participatory. Sibal suggested that the new system has to be dynamic, vigorous, bold, inclusive and integrated among other things. While congratulating the students, Sibal pointed out that a new life awaited them beyond the classrooms of BHU.
"Young minds have a great responsibility on their shoulders and they must strive hard to become agents of change of a new India," he said. The minister also entreated the students to prepare themselves for accepting responsibility for the management, governance and improvement of society.

"The students need to have a belief in the power of self and it can bring a lot of difference while facing challenges that seem truly insurmountable. The young students should never give up, never compromise on excellence and convert every adversity into opportunity," he said.
