To beef up security at stations, the Western Railway (WR) plans to install around 500 CCTV cameras on the Mumbai rail network by next July. According to the railway administration, the WR currently has some 1,100 CCTV cameras on its Mumbai network.

Anand Jha, senior divisional security commissioner, Railway Protection Force (RPF), said, "With help of the high-tech cameras, the RPF has cracked several crime cases, including thefts and abductions of children. To further enhance the security system, the administration is examining spots and railway stations where an additional network of these cameras is required," he told reporters.

The RPF has recommended that 565 CCTV cameras be installed.

At nodal stations, RPF personnel monitor CCTV camera footages, whereas at smaller stations, the station master’s office oversees such operations.

Jha also announced the use of an e-patrolling application to keep tabs on the movements of on-duty RPF staff. On July 6, mid-day had reported on the RPF’s plan to introduce a technology-driven system that would track the movement, location and deployment of every personnel with the help of a mobile software. “The policemen on duty will have to log onto the application and updated their location,” explained a senior RPF official.
